JOB SUMMARY

Under direction of the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent, this position is responsible to perform general building maintenance tasks and operations independently, as a member of a work team or in support of skilled Building Maintenance Mechanic staff as well as interacting with contracted staff to maintain various County owned and leased buildings to ensure uninterrupted day to day operations.

This position is primarily responsible for maintenance at the Behavioural Health & Developmental Services office(s). This position may be tasked to work at other County owned and leased sites, such as but not limited too; Youth Intervention Center, Courthouse, Government Center, Forensic Center, Public Safety Training Center and Parks.

This position is deemed essential and may be required to work during inclement weather, natural disaster, other emergency situations and/or when the County offices are officially closed due to inclement weather, natural disaster, other emergency situations, etc. This position may be required to work off of its normal shift and may be required to work an "on-call" schedule.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • This position reports to the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent (position # 00500159)

  • This position has no staff reporting directly to it on a daily basis

  • This position may act as a lead worker on specific projects from time to time

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Safely operate a vehicle (with or without trailer) / equipment

  • Ability to follow County and Departmental Policies and Procedures

  • Maintenance of building exterior, interior, mechanical, plumbing, fire, electrical, security, burglar/fire alarm, energy management, voice, data and CCTV systems and equipment. While operating various tools and equipment, including but not limited to carpentry tools, plumbing tools, HVAC and electrical testing equipment and related equipment as required. While working with a variety of chemicals including cleaning products, solvents, glues, etc.

  • Perform general building maintenance, janitorial, grounds, weather related duties and other facilities maintenance related duties as assigned.

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled plumbing, carpentry, painting and electrical activities associated with the maintenance and repair of facilities.

  • Set up and takes down equipment in support of County programs as approved by the Facility Manager

  • Maintains digital records of activities including preventative maintenance services and service requests.

OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES

  • Ability to operate a computer to navigate the internet and use Windows platform (Outlook, Excel, Word)

  • Creates, sends, receives, reads and responds to email

  • Works with a computer based work order system to track tasks

  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicant must have basic computer skills that include using email, navigating the internet, creating spreadsheets and documents

  • Applicant must have 1-3 years of experience in the building maintenance, building service or construction field or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills and ability to perform this job.

  • High school diploma or GED required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • This position requires knowledge of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry or related experience.

  • Must be able to communicate well with others and understand and follow written and oral directions

  • Must have some computer skills and understand or be capable of learning the use of Microsoft Office type programs

  • Must be able to work safely and effectively

  • Must be able to work off of a step ladder up to 12 feet high

  • Must be able to work out of a man lift of up to 42 feet high

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCES

  • Must have and maintain a valid PA Driver's License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy and submit to a driving record background check

  • Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint-based background check

  • Must pass a pre-employment ChildLine Safety Check

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening

  • Must pass and maintain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) training and certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position requires wearing a supplied uniform consisting of long pants and long and/or short-sleeve shirts

  • This position requires the use of closed toe and closed back shoes that support the ankle

  • This position has been identified as having the potential for exposure to Hepatitis B. Access to training and a voluntary vaccination against Hepatitis B is provided.

  • This position requires lengthy hours on your feet, bending, twisting, reaching, turning, walking forward, backward and to either side, pushing, pulling, grasping, tactual manipulation with hands, repetitive motions, kneeling on one or both knees, while working in the following environments: office, kitchen, gymnasium, library, classroom, detention and shelter environments, maintenance and mechanical areas, outside grounds, sidewalk, parking and driveway areas and on the roof of buildings up to 135 feet above ground.

  • This position requires lifting up to 75 pounds to waist height, 50 pounds to shoulder height and 40 pounds above the head.

  • This position generally works in an environment that is maintained between 66 and 76 degrees.

  • This position may be subject to working in an environment that is below freezing and in excess of 77 degrees from time to time depending on the task assigned.

  • This position is exposed to the potential of bodily fluids including, but not limited to: blood, urine, feces, vomit, and saliva
