TITLE: Maintenance Technician CLASSIFICATION: Non-Certified FLSA: Non-exempt DEPARTMENT: Building and Grounds SALARY: Local 382 Salary Schedule WORK YEAR: 12 months

REPORTS TO: Dir. Of Bldg. &Grounds

DESCRIPTION: Maintenance Technicians perform maintenance services with specific responsibility for maintaining facilities in safe operating condition, addressing immediate operational and/or safety concerns, performing skilled trades as qualified, and safely using and maintaining required tools and machinery.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Skill in a field relating to building and/or engineering trades

  • Active Physical Condition

  • Mathematical competency sufficient to perform calculations including fractions, percents, and/or ratios.

  • Driving record with no more than one moving violation in the past two years.

  • Illinois Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 30 days

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Basic Math

  • Standards, methods, materials and tools in an assigned skilled trade

  • Safety practices and procedures

Ability to:

  • Gather and/or classify data

  • Use job-related equipment appropriately and effectively

  • Problem-solve using data and other information

  • Adapt to changing work conditions

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: (May not include all duties performed)

  • Perform maintenance tasks for the purpose of completing projects in a safe, efficient manner

  • Coordinate with supervisor and other personnel for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.

  • Install system component parts, classroom and office equipment and facility components (e.g. lighting, heating and ventilating systems, alarms, plumbing, security, electrical panels, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment.

  • Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.

  • Monitors and maintains boilers to ensure proper functioning

  • Operates equipment including snow removal equipment as necessary

  • Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings and seminars for the purpose of gathering the information necessary to perform functions

  • Performs a variety of maintenance activities (e.g. carpentry, painting, glazing, HVAC) in order to complete projects efficiently.

  • Performs preventative maintenance functions on HVAC systems as directed

  • Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, boiler logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.

  • Repairs a variety of furniture and building components to ensure that they are maintained safe working condition

  • Makes sure that equipment and supplies are available to perform necessary maintenance tasks

  • Transports a variety of tools and equipment as needed for the job site

  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Inside/outside environment including inclement weather

HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS:

Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant finger dexterity. The job is performed under some temperature extremes.

Makes on-street bus exchanges where no maintenance is required; this does not include the shifting of buses covered by section 16 of the Agreement. Must be capable of understanding verbal and written instructions and performing routine tasks in a workmanlike manner. Must possess the physical capacity to perform required tasks.
