Maintenance Worker range: $16.23/hour - $19.48/hour

Equipment Operator I range: $18.99/hour - $22.79/hour

Equipment Operator II range: $20.55/hour - $24.66/hour

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under close supervision, performs general labor and maintenance of City streets, parks, facilities and infrastructure in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. Equipment Operator levels will perform skilled and semiskilled work operating equipment and performing manual labor tasks, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Maintenance Worker - 15307

  • Operates a variety of specialized equipment and performs manual labor tasks in order to maintain safe parks, streets and City facilities as assigned; duties will vary according to job assignment.

  • Operates and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; identifies and reports problems requiring additional attention.

  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of roadways; maintains landscaping and park grounds; clears trash, brush, weeds and debris from roadways, structures, grounds and facilities.

  • Digs and fills holes; patches streets; clears and repairs roadway, shoulders and adjoining areas; installs and maintains signs; 

  • Cleans and maintains City facilities and buildings; makes minor facilities repairs.

  • Install and maintain street signage.

  • Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Equipment Operator I - 15306

In addition to responsibilities of a Maintenance Worker:

  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment and performs manual labor tasks in order to maintain safe streets, drainage structures and City facilities as assigned; duties will vary according to job assignment.

  • Performs skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance and general labor work.

  • Operates and maintains vehicles, tools and street and drainage construction and maintenance equipment, including but not limited to a chain saw, weed eater, dump truck, backhoe, skid steer loader, roller, front end loader, mini excavator, street sweeper and tractor (mower) in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.

  • Inspects, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on vehicles and equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems and damage.

  • Completes daily logs and reports as required.

  • Assists in resurfacing, oiling, patching, sweeping, grading and shaping roads; digs and fills holes; clears and repairs roadway, shoulders and adjoining areas; installs and maintains signs.

  • Maintains landscaping and grounds; clears trash, brush, weeds and debris from roadways, structures, grounds and facilities.

  • Performs traffic control activities as needed; reports safety hazards and traffic problems.

  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Equipment Operator II - 15305

In addition to responsibilities of an Equipment Operator I:

  • Operates a variety of specialized vehicles and heavy equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures in order to maintain safe streets, drainage structures and City facilities as assigned; duties will vary according to job assignment.

  • Leadership skills and trains staff on other duties and equipment.

  • Assists with coordination of work crews performing activities according to work schedule; monitors task completion; assures that all safety rules and regulations are observed; serves as crew leader as assigned.

  • Hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks.

  • Loads and unloads materials using power equipment.

  • Performs skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance and road repair work; resurfaces, grades and shapes roads as directed.

  • Performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies; performs traffic control activities as needed; reports safety hazards and traffic problems.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Maintenance Worker: High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND one year of general maintenance experience.

Equipment Operator I: High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND two (2) years work experience operating vehicles and street and drainage construction and maintenance equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equipment Operator II: High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND three (3) years work experience operating specialized vehicles and heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstration or testing of skills may be required.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Maintenance Worker: Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

Equipment Operator I: Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License and must be able to obtain a Class B Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within ninety (90) days from the start of employment.

Equipment Operator II: Must possess a valid Class A Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or retain a Class A CDL within ninety (90) days from the start of employment.

Required Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.

  • Basic tools and equipment used in streets, parks, facilities and grounds maintenance.

  • City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

  • Traffic laws and rules for vehicle and equipment operation.

  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions in using heavy equipment.

  • Operation, maintenance and repair standards for motorized equipment and vehicles.

  • City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

  • Federal and state safety laws and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL.

  • Local and regional traffic patterns, road systems, and the locations of landmarks and buildings.

  • Materials, methods, and practices used in street and drainage construction and maintenance.

Required Skill in:

  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.

  • Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.

  • Identifying mechanical problems.

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.

  • Working independently or as a team to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
