This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), in Salinas, California.
The employee works in the operation, repair, and preventative facility maintenance duties including, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration, electrical and lighting systems for the 17-acre Crop Improvement and Protection Research facility, its laboratories, and grounds.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Making repairs on plumbing systems, water supply and waste systems, and electrical and lighting systems. Regenerating water softener system. Operating centralized, multiple zone HVAC system and individual air conditioning and heating units.
Adding refrigerant, changing filters, lubricating compressors, and other parts of operating equipment. Preparing surfaces by methods such as sanding and wire brushing.
Using testing equipment and calibration instruments, e.g., multi-meters, amp-probes, electronic leak detectors and refrigerant gauges.
Using work orders, oral instructions, and wiring diagrams to determine the repair or installation to be made.
Determining surfaces and coating materials to be used.
Occasional travel - Occasional travel for training, maybe once or twice a year.

Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. If selected you may be subject to a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and a credit report inquiry. Special Agency Check (SAC) and full background investigation required for positions working with BSL-3 (or higher) agents, or in BSL-3/BSL-4 facilities.
The position requires lifting, pushing and carrying objects of various weights, sizes and shapes. Efforts to complete movements require walking, climbing, bending or crawling. Long periods of walking and standing required.
Work may be performed outdoors under extreme weather, and dusty conditions may prevail. Incumbent is subject to periods of excessive noise when exposed to and using equipment. Some work is done on scaffolding, ladders and rooftops. Hazardous conditions exist while working with or around cutting tools.
