ABOUT THE POSITIONS:

The Maintenance Worker is the entry level position in the maintenance series. Maintenance Workers perform physical labor in construction, maintenance and landscaping assignments. Work is closely supervised and performed according to established procedures or specific oral or written instruction. 

This is a "flexibly staffed" job classification.  Maintenance Workers who have met specific criteria established for the division and department where the employee is working will promote to the journey level of Skilled Maintenance Worker, which performs work assignments of greater complexity with more independence and has a pay range of $28.25 - $33.64 per hour.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT IN STRETS MAINTENANCE WILL POSSESS:

  • Experience in repair of asphalt and concrete, street signs, and roadway marking

  • Experience in operating heavy equipment used in street maintenance

Transportation and Public Works Department:

Maintenance Workers in the Transportation and Public Works Department assist in the maintenance and repair of asphalt and concrete streets, bus signs, bus shelters, traffic signs; and assist in building and repairing a variety of City facilities, structures, and equipment.

Essential Duties:

  • Repair asphalt and concrete streets by crack sealing, overlay, light patching, pothole patching and removing failing sections of street and replacing with asphalt or concrete;

  • remove and replace failing asphalt and concrete with backhoe, loader, skid steer, or by hand;

  • prepare streets for annual slurry seal contract and provide notification and traffic control for slurry application;

  • install and repair farebox, bus signs, bus shelter solar lighting, video surveillance equipment, traffic signs, sign poles and guard rails;

  • use special sign-making equipment and tools to lay out and fabricate signs of wood, plastic or metal;

  • clean storm ditches, creeks, drains, catch basins, culverts;

  • perform general interior and exterior building maintenance;

  • dig trenches and post holes;

  • measure, mark off and paint traffic markings in streets;

  • eradicate street markings and install new markings with thermo plastic;

  • remove and replace pavement markers, buttons and reflectors;

  • pour and finish concrete;

  • layout and form pedestrian ramps to meet ADA standards;

  • hazardous material response and cleanup;

  • Perform general building cleaning and custodial duties including graffiti removal;

  • perform general interior and exterior building maintenance involving carpentry, painting and plumbing;

  • repair, move, and install furniture, cabinets, shelves, workstations, and gates;

  • assist in building and painting a variety of City facilities and structures; and

  • Maintain buildings.

Knowledge of:  Uses and purposes of a wide variety of general construction tools and equipment; basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; safe work practices, including safety precautions for operating power equipment, working in traffic and under hazardous conditions.

Ability to: Perform heavy manual labor under adverse conditions; learn to use standard manual, power, pneumatic, hydraulic and custodial equipment; learn to maintain electronic parking access control equipment; maintain simple irrigation systems; perform general building maintenance and repairs requiring the ability to climb ladders and reach for objects; repeatedly dig and lift shovels of earth or debris weighing at least 35 pounds; work with various fluids and chemicals using normal protective wear; set up and remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects; learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation and reading; understand and carry out oral and written directions in order to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner; take basic measurements of boards or spaces; fill out work orders, daily logs of work performed and perform physical inventories; learn to use computer technology as necessary to complete job tasks, e.g., complete online timecard, send/read email, complete online training; maintain good working relationships with co-workers and volunteers; communicate with the public in a tactful and effective manner; work various work schedules including weekend shifts and possibly called out for emergency work at night, on weekends or holidays.

Experience and Education:  Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience

- Six months of experience in heavy manual work.

Education

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class C California motor vehicle operator's license.  Thirty-six months of recent satisfactory driving history is required and job offers will be contingent upon meeting the City of Santa Rosa Driving History Standard, viewable by clicking HERE.  Possession of a Class A license will be required prior to completion of the probationary period. 

In addition to the abilities listed above, qualifications for Maintenance Worker in specific assignments include the following:

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment; obtain a Class A commercial license. 

Selection Process:

Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications based on a screening of the application materials and supplemental questionnaire will be invited to continue in a selection process that may consist solely of an application screening, or may include an oral appraisal interview, assessment center, or another activity selected by the Human Resources Department.  An eligible list will be established as a result of this selection process and may be used to fill future vacancies.

Working Conditions:

Work is generally performed outdoors, in all weather conditions, walking over flat, uneven or rocky surfaces for extended periods of time with exposure to heavy traffic, noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, airborne particles, noxious odors, grease, oil, cleaning chemicals, solvents spills using normal protective equipment. Assignments may include work in cramped areas such as manholes and trenches and sitting for short periods of time.

Incumbents must have the strength, flexibility, and coordination to perform the following repetitive movements: hand-arm, bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, lifting, reaching and shoveling of various contents. Lifting and reaching can be above shoulder level and/or overhead. Repairing small objects requires making skillful, controlled manipulations, precise arm-hand movements, static arm-hand positions and fine, highly controlled manipulations. A computer keyboard is used to enter and retrieve data.

Incumbents must have the hand and foot coordination to operate vehicles and machinery with automatic or manual transmission requiring coordinating the movement of more than one limb simultaneously. Operation of heavy equipment will require making fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism.

Incumbents are required to move objects weighing up to 95 pounds for distances of up to 20 feet and objects weighing up to 50 pounds for more than 20 feet.

A Maintenance Worker must have auditory ability to hear alarms and other warning devices and visual acuity to see hazards, read written material and discriminate among and match colors.

Verbal communication is generally conducted face to face, although may also be conducted on the telephone and in a group setting.
