The Maintenance Worker is an entry-level position within the Greenway vegetation maintenance crew.  This position will support a crew of six staff in the management and maintenance of the vegetation along the City of Raleigh Parks System's Greenways.  At times this position may be directed to assist other crews and/or departments in cleanup efforts, maintenance, and repairs.

The Maintenance Worker position will work as part of a team to maintain the landscape and grounds within the City of Raleigh Park's Greenway system. The successful candidate will communicate well, be reliable, be safety conscious, and possess a strong work ethic.  They will have an eye for detail, be ready to learn, be flexible, and have the ability to work independently or, as a part of a team.

This position is located at the City of Raleigh's Northeast Remote Operations Center, Park Maintenance Division 7700-A Burwell St., Raleigh, NC. The site is shared with other Park Maintenance Division teams including greenway, construction, playground, and park maintenance crews.

  • Maintains a variety of trail landscapes and improves the safety of the trail system by clearing sightlines, trimming encroachment issues, performing invasive plant removal and restoration work, weeding, mulching, mowing, edging, assisting with storm response, bucking up fallen trees, dragging/chipping brush, pressure washing greenway structures, and leaf removal.

  • Assists the Gardener with plant/tree installs, watering plants/trees, and pruning trees and shrubs.

  • Assists the Gardener in performing habitat maintenance/management activities, including invasive species removal, site prep, and restoration.

  • Safely operates and maintains machinery, including out-front and zero-turn mowers, slope mower, mini skid steer loaders, tractors, chainsaw, pole saw, brush cutter, string trimmer, edger, backpack blower, and pressure washers.

  • Performs preventative equipment maintenance, including replacing worn or damaged parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery.

  • Assists the Greenway Gardener as their assistant/spotter, spraying pesticides, performing bed preparation duties, and landscape installations.

  • Occasionally performs repair work, preventative maintenance on, and/or installation of tables, benches, fences, signs, etc.

  • Assists the city in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations.

  • May require working extended hours and weekends during storm events.

  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, and a satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with a variety of hand tools and power equipment (Rakes, Shovels, Line Trimmers, Edgers, Chainsaws, Blowers, etc.).

  • Familiarity with grounds maintenance equipment (Tractors, Mowers, etc.).

  • Familiarity with the native plants found in the Southeast Piedmont Region.

  • Familiarity with common invasive plant and animal species found within the Southeast United States.

  • Familiarity with hauling/towing/pulling trailers.

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work.

  • Basic mathematical concepts.

  • Basic filing and record-keeping principles.

  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.

  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment.

  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment).

  • Customer service principles.

  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.

  • Modern office technology

Skill In:

  • Following directions and meeting standards.

  • Providing attention to detail in assignments.

  • Proofreading and error correction.

ADA and Other Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
