Hiring range: $35,546.00

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

Driving all types of haul vehicles including flat bed and dump trucks, as well as operating excavation and grading equipment;

Operating special function trucks such as leaf collection trucks (both automated and walk-behind), and snow removal equipment;

Participating in ground work using manual and power tools for jobs including cleaning storm drains and catch basins, ditch maintenance, pipe repair and maintenance, and general street maintenance related activities.

May be required to work in confined spaces such as underground drainage structures.

Required to meet work standards by following productivity, quality and customer service standards; resolving operational problems; identifying work process improvements; completing standard daily work reports and work orders.

Also responsible for the maintenance and repair of assigned equipment; maintaining safe, secure and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal and safety regulations.

Will be required to maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing technical publications; bench-marking state-of-the-art practices; accomplishing organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and three years of assignment-related equipment operation/driving or specialized maintenance experience.


An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Must have experience working around buried and underground utilities.


  • Valid NC Class A Commercial Driver License, or the ability to obtain within 15 days of hire.

This position performs daily maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities and performs highly technically skilled work in the general maintenance and repair of buildings and laboratory equipment/systems, related equipment, and plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems. Under limited direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the position exercises independent initiative and judgment in the application of trade skills to a variety of maintenance and repair problems and in determining the extent of repair or replacement work to be done. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: * Using diagnostic and technical skills to properly maintain and repair equipment in a timely and cost-effective manner * Applying carpentry, cabinetry, plumbing, painting, refrigeration, electrical and welding skills in the fabrication and repair of laboratory equipment * Wiring electrical connections compatible with voltage requirements and available services * Completing requests from technical units for maintenance work to be performed on existing equipment or systems using online work order system * Uncrating and installing laboratory equipment at the appropriate worksite * Performing preventative maintenance on a wide variety of laboratory equipment * Maintaining all shop tools and equipment in good working order * Instructing staff in proper use of tools and equipment * Maintaining OSHA and other standards for maintenance procedures and enforces standards of quality and quality of work as established by federal, state, and management guidelines * Procuring parts and supplies for repairs and fabrications using local resources, NC's E-Procurement System, outside vendors, and NCSLPH stockroom as needed * Maintaining the Fixed Asset inventory control system for laboratory equipment and instruments, for accounting during annual inventory of fixed assets and surplus of old equipment. * Proper utilization of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when working in restricted access areas.
