The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to about 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities.
Our Water Distribution division is looking for a Maintenance Technician to join our team. Maintenance Technicians are devoted to completing hands on repairs and installations on a wide variety of assets (water mains, services, valves, fire hydrants, etc.) within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Maintenance Technician also operates trucks and equipment essential to completing these jobs for the City's distribution.

Work Hours:
Maintenance Technicians work a rotating, after-hours call schedule. Pay for being on-call
(standby) is 8 hours at regular pay. If called back into work, the employee is paid at the overtime rate as indicated by policy. Hours could differ based upon flexibility and seasonality, wherein availability to work a varied schedule is required for this position.
Install, replace, and repair assets such as water services, mains, fire hydrants, split services, sample stations, and auto flushers
Set up and break down work zones, including signage and traffic control devices
Excavate and perform repairs on leaking, broken, or damaged system components
Haul equipment and materials to and from job sites
Monitor, organize, and replenish inventory of tools and parts used by crew
Monitor and ensure safe working conditions and environment; identify potential hazards and initiate or coordinate corrective action to maintain safety
Maintenance and operability of safety and work-related equipment; monitors processes and activities to assure quality.
Responds to inquiries, complaints, issues, and information requests from internal and external customers; addresses and resolves problems and complaints; monitors compliance with applicable regulations, standards, policies, and procedures
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
Moving Company: labor, truck driver
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Positions in this class typically require standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
