What you'll be doing:

  • Perform mechanical, routine maintenance and general repair on line trucks and other vehicles and equipment.

  • Ensure interior facilities, exterior grounds, parking lots and vehicles are maintained, functioning efficiently and have a clean appearance, and responds to faculty and staff in a prompt and courteous manner.

  • Maintain shop area, tools, and equipment in logical and organized format to minimize theft and ensure they are operating properly.

  • Conduct thorough inspections of vehicles and all motorized equipment resulting in minimal downtime

The success patterns for this position are:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Minimum of two (2) years' prior work experience in vehicle maintenance, general construction, and facility repairs, or any combination of equivalent education and experience

  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and able to obtain a CDL Class A with Airbrake endorsement and Certified Forklift Operator's license during first year of employment

The work environment and physical demands may require:

  • Ability to tolerate extreme weather conditions while working

  • Comfort with heights in order to access elevated platforms, roofs, etc.

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs

  • Standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, and kneeling

  • Frequently lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds

  • Demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools

  • Strong manual dexterity

  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception (either naturally or with the aid of eye glasses)

  • Passing a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen

Under general supervision, directs work crews performing road construction, road and bridge maintenance activities including: gravel and pavement resurfacing, repair and or maintenance of potholes, guardrails, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewer systems, and other facilities within the public right of way, snow and ice removal and tree trimming or removal. FLSA: Non-Exempt Essential Job Functions Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks. * Plans, directs, trains and evaluates the work of field crews; operates equipment and performs maintenance work, as necessary. * Confers with the Road Maintenance Supervisor on a regular basis to discuss current and upcoming work projects. * Conducts field inspections of completed projects to ensure quality. * Calculates materials and equipment needed for specific projects; assures that materials are available at the job site. * Installs repairs and replaces guardrails. * Constructs and repairs curbs, gutters and sidewalks. * Installs and maintains fences. * Removes driftwood and other debris under bridges and culverts to avoid restricted water flow. * Directs staff in the proper procedures for traffic control, planning and setup. * Operates heavy motorized equipment for road and other public facilities construction and maintenance. * Operates heavy equipment for snow and ice removal and sand application on roadways. * Maintains records of equipment and personnel. * Serves as the acting Road Maintenance Supervisor as needed. * Responds to emergency call-outs resulting from severe weather, chemical spills or major accidents. * Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications * Five (5) years of experience in the construction and/or maintenance of road related facilities including but not limited to tree removal, snow removal and bridge repair. * A valid State of California class 'A' commercial driver's license with tanker and airbrake endorsements. Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements * Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment. * May be required to lift and carry items more than 50 pounds. * May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals, extreme weather conditions and infectious diseases.
