PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

The Maintenance Technician A will serve the production areas of the business with skilled mechanical support for all areas of production including the installation, maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, piping, and minor electrical and electronic systems. Class A Technicians are focused on enabling and equipping the plant to operate efficiently, while minimizing downtime, and protecting and prolonging the economic life of plant equipment and capital assets at an optimal and practical cost.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for applying mechanical skills, knowledge and principles in a safe manner while determining equipment malfunctions and restoring equipment to operation with minimal disruption to operations.

  • Serves as a primary interface with Plant Supervisors and Operators in the assessment, identification, and repair of developing or non-scheduled issues with equipment and systems; communicates daily with machine operators to ensure adequate support is provided.

  • Visually inspects for visible wear and defects and listens to machines and equipment to locate causes of malfunctions to include testing of machinery and equipment; troubleshoots issues with operators and/or Supervisors to diagnose problem and identify a solution to repair the machine.

  • Performs proper scheduling of work to maximize task completion with minimal plant disruption, reduction in unscheduled downtime, while lowering costs and creating higher plant efficiency.

  • Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts.

  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.

  • Assists with the installation and repair of electrical apparatus, such as transformers and wiring, electrical and electronic components of machinery and equipment.

  • Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment.

  • Sets up and operates various machinery, equipment, and tools such as forklift, manlift, boom, platform lift, table saw, router, bandsaw, drill press, circular saw, hand drill, hammer drill, grinder, ox-acetylene set, welding equipment, cutting torch, etc. while following all safety procedures in order to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs, fixtures and/or tools.

  • Fabricates and repairs counters, benches, partitions, and other structures, including some carpentry projects as needed.

  • Completes preventative maintenance as required for each machine, completes work orders as assigned and the corresponding departmental paperwork/record keeping required.

  • Actively partners with Plant Supervisors, Operators and Maintenance Team to ensure that regularly scheduled maintenance is completed with support from the operators as necessary.

  • As needed, completes maintenance and repair of the facility and the structures within the facility including paint, drywall, and minor structural repairs, such as repairing doors, windows, walls, and floors; performs minor plumbing and HVAC repair.

  • Responds to requests from other team members on handheld radio or PA system to address needs throughout the day.

  • Utilizing a Continuous Improvement mindset, proactively seeks ways to reduce downtime and improve maintenance work processes to better enable plant operations to maximize efficiencies.

  • Actively partners with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to assist with troubleshooting and repairing machines as necessary.

  • Regularly completes training equipment manufacturers or other mechanical/technical training required; Helps with training others as needed.

  • Actively seeks improvements and updates to processes, new procedures and innovations, which would add to the efficiency and safety of the operation; proactively seeks ways to reduce downtime processes to better enable plant operations to maximize efficiencies.

  • Maintains upkeep and organization of all equipment and tools assigned to the department and submits requests of any additional tools or equipment that would add to the efficiency and safety of the operation.

  • Maintains a clean work environment in accordance with Food Safety and 5S systems.

  • Follows all safety related policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines. Use situational awareness and identify unsafe behaviors and conditions; wears appropriate PPE at all times for the task at hand and the area.

AUTHORITY:

Must have the ability to lead a crew that has been placed with them to execute the demands of the maintenance operation efficiently and to respond to oral instructions from the supervisor and written instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 3+ years of related manufacturing maintenance experience

  • Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Successful candidates will have experience with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment; must be proficient in maintaining utility systems (electrical, water, air, HVAC), facility infrastructure and various types of manufacturing equipment.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated knowledge and experience troubleshooting mechanical issues.

  • Must be able to read and work with mechanical blueprints, drawings, and sketches.

  • Must be highly self-motivated and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a strong "customer" focus.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must have the ability to read and understand documents, letters, etc. and write legibly in English.

Must be able to understand and speak clearly, communicate, and understand directions in English as needed. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Able to calculate figures, amounts such as proportions, area, circumference, and volume. Apply the concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must become a Certified Fork Lift operator in accordance with SCT training and carry a copy of your certification with you.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, regularly required to walk, stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with arms and hands. Frequently is required to climb, balance, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently lifts/moves up to 50 pounds; lift up to 100 pounds+ with help of others. Must be able to perform these functions for a minimum of 8 hours straight (with a 30-minute meal break any other applicable breaks during the shift) on a regular basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Team member successfully performing the essential functions of this job. Regular attendance and reporting for work on time are necessary requirements as is availability for overtime work if necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to a dusty atmosphere with loud noise, which may require both eye and ear protection in some areas. Moving mechanical parts will also be exposed; safety guards have been put in place for the safety of all Team members but during set up, if a machine must be broken down and reassembled to complete the next job, questions regarding such operation should be directed to your supervisor as they arise.
