Hiring Range is $40,352 to $45,424 annually based on qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Resource Specialist, this position is responsible for creating, enhancing, restoring, and managing wetland, grassland, and riparian forest wildlife habitats in a large suburban open space park. The position includes vegetation management, wildlife management, weed management, restoration, stewardship education, and general park maintenance. These projects may include: weed control, tree and shrub planting, wetland enhancement, seeding, erosion control, garbage removal, shop/equipment maintenance, and landscape maintenance. Additional responsibilities are to assist the Resource Specialist in the coordination of volunteers and others who work on resource projects.

Essential Duties:

  • Coordinates and supervises day-to-day resource projects planned by the Resource Specialist, including selecting, loading, and tracking tools and equipment.

  • Provides project oversight and safety while in the field for projects involving Resource Technicians, Rangers, volunteers, organized groups, and community service workers.

  • Performs park maintenance including minor carpentry, fence repairs, sign installation, snow removal, trash and restroom cleaning, trail maintenance, minor facility maintenance, and bridge and deck repairs.

  • Creates, enhances, restores, and manages wetland, grassland, and riparian forest wildlife habitats through vegetation management including planning, seeding, watering, pruning, tree and shrub planting, mowing, weed pulling and spraying, and garden care.

  • Monitors landscapes for pests (weeds, insects and diseases) and performs pesticide applications as needed.

  • Uses, maintains, repairs, and services a variety of hand and power tools and equipment including mowers, ATV's, chainsaws, line-trimmers, trucks and trailers, spray equipment, and small tractors.

  • Assists in purchasing tools, supplies, and equipment.

  • Provides professional and helpful customer service when interacting with the public and representing the District.

  • Performs other duties and special assignments as directed.

  • Complies with District and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • May serve as an Emergency services worker.

  • Works occasional weekends; evenings, and holidays as needed.

  • Must have the ability to work in the conditions and environment listed.

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.

  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Six (6) months or one (1) season of park operations, ground maintenance, resource-related work or equivalent is preferred.

  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • CPR/First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain upon hire.

  • Must obtain a Chemical applicator license from the Colorado Department of Agriculture within one (1) year of hire.

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG, Native Plant Master or similar trainings preferred.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of ecological principles, resource management techniques, and local flora/fauna is desirable.

  • Working knowledge of integrated weed management; previous herbicide application experience, basic knowledge of computers and data entry, or GPS skills may be beneficial. Safety training or certifications with power equipment is beneficial as well.

  • Knowledge of: ecological and wildlife interpretation principles; Colorado's ecosystems; safety and emergency first-aid procedures.

  • The ability to successfully: learn about local land and water ecosystems; establish and maintain safe environments; perform first aid and/or CPR; work evenings, weekends, and some holidays; work productively without direct or constant supervision within established policies and procedures; provide superior customer service; effectively manage employees and volunteers.

  • Skilled in: small engine maintenance and operation, plant identification, swimming or boating skills, safe ATV or chainsaw operations would all be preferred.

  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.

  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.

Material and Equipment Used:

To successfully perform the required job duties, this position regularly uses a phone, computer, printer, fax, projector, and other common office equipment. Requires the use of hand tools, power tools and chain saws, an ATV, skid steer, and other motorized equipment, herbicide tanks and sprayers, park vehicles and trailers, bicycles, and canoes. Small animal handling and care required. This position may need to drive a personal vehicle to various District facilities.

Working Environment:

This position requires work in a variety of settings including working indoors and outdoors, daytime and night-time including in dark areas, subject to variable weather conditions, ecosystems, landscape, and wildlife. Outdoor working environments can be wet, humid, extreme in temperature variations, and loud background noises. Outdoor work may also require biking, canoeing, wading in moving water, and handling small animals. Indoor work takes place in a historic two-story building with stairs in a busy nature center/office environment subject to continuous interruptions.

Physical Requirements:

Stand, walk/hike long distances, and sit for extended periods. Handles and operates objects and equipment, reaches outward and above shoulder to carry, pull, push or lift up to 50 lbs. May occasionally climb, crawl, squat, kneel and lift up to 50 lbs. May carry, pull, push or lift 75 lbs. or more with or without assistance. May need to pick up small plants and animals. Must be able to see close up and at a distance with vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision. Volunteer programs are presented in English. Must communicate clearly and effectively, must understand and be understood.
