Maintenance Technician III - Streets

The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to serve as a Maintenance Tech III (Street Maintenance Crew Leader) position in our Department of Public Works - Transportation Division.

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Street Maintenance Crew Leader to supervise and participate in the work of a crew responsible for street maintenance and construction projects. Includes supervision of approximately 4 field operations staff.

Supervision to include assigning and directing the work of a diverse team of maintenance technicians on street maintenance projects. Will be responsible for ordering and tracking Miss Utility location tickets. Must coordinate and maintain daily work schedules and track job progress, inspect work sites and enforce all safety standards including work zone safety. Must have excellent problem solving, decision making, verbal and written skills, and team leadership ability that results successful outcomes.

Candidates must have the ability to use various computer hardware such as desktops, laptops, and mobile devices as well as various software platforms such as Microsoft Office Suite, QAlert, ArcGIS, and VueWorks. Must have working knowledge of various infrastructure materials including asphalt, concrete, and aggregates.

Must also possess the ability to read and understand construction drawings/sketches and use a builder's level. Experience supervising and operating various heavy and light construction equipment. Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks.

Position operates heavy and light equipment during snow removal efforts and may be involved with special events and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed. Completion of other tasks and jobs supporting the division may be assigned.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3 to 5 years' experience and/or training in supervision, mowing, applying herbicides, applying fertilizer, and other landscape maintenance tasks or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a current, valid Virginia Class A CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Must possess current VDOT flagging and Intermediate work area protection certifications or obtain within 6 months of hire. .
