The purpose of this job is to perform skilled construction work on new and existing buildings and features within the park system such as trails, walkways, shelters, playgrounds, and other structures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
  • Assists in a variety of construction related trades throughout the park system.

  • Performs framing, truss installation and finishes carpentry work.

  • Forms, pours and finishes concrete for footings, pads, approaches, columns and sidewalks.

  • Operates a wide variety of light, medium and heavy equipment associated with the construction trades.

  • Installs different types of roofing materials including metal roof installation and asphalt shingle installation.

  • Operates surveying equipment and laser levels necessary for grading and construction of parking lots, roads, walkways and structures.

  • Assists with the installation of water lines, sewer lines, storm drainage lines, valves and electrical conduit.

  • Performs electrical and plumbing work as directed: install fixtures, switches, receptacles, and wiring; and install faucets, commodes, water heaters, and valves.

  • Pulls and backs single and tandem trailers used to haul materials, equipment, tools, and supplies to and from locations.

  • Maintains detailed and accurate records.

  • Provides customer service to patrons.

  • Trains staff and volunteers as assigned; conducts public outreach. Participates in continuing education and training as required.

  • Assists with snow removal during inclement weather.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate or technical degree in related field preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.

The Construction Mechanic will work with the Construction Division with the primary focus of work related to the new construction of Capital Improvement Projects for the City of Columbia Parks & Recreation Department. Applicants should have experience with forming, pouring, and finishing concrete for footings, pads, approaches, columns, and sidewalks. The ideal candidate should have experience operating a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment associated with the construction trades. Candidate should have experience reading shop drawings and installing prefabricated metal structures such as shelters and buildings. This position is required to frequently pull and back single and tandem trailers used to haul materials, equipment, tools, and supplies to and from locations. Candidate should possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire; and maintain an excellent driving record. Full-time with benefits with annual salary of $46,727 - $57,475 ($22.47 - $27.63 hourly). Position hours

  • Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with varying weekend responsibilities.
