Maintenance Technician I - Ballfields Crew

Description

The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to work with the Athletic Field Maintenance crew. This crew will work with a variety of turf and general park maintenance at River's Edge Park.

Performs skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized equipment (Steiner, Zero-Turn Mowers, Walk Behind Mowers), small gas powered two-stroke equipment (weedeaters, edgers, backpack blowers), and operates heavy and light equipment during snow removal. Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks; including some nightsand weekends, as needed. High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience.A Class B Commercial Driver License is preferred but the ability to obtain a Class B CDL learners permit and license within 12 months of hiring is a minimum. Possessing a Registered Technician Spraying license, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification are preferred but the ability to obtain all three within 18 months is required.

SUMMARY

Participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of athletic field and turf grass maintenance, park restroom cleaning, trash removal, and general park landscape maintenance. Performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of several types of motorized equipment or maintenance of facilities and/or equipment

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position reports to a Maintenance Tech IV for daily assignments or the Maintenance Tech III in the absence of the crew leader. Will on occasion assit with the supervision of part-time staff or volunteers as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on the area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader and other medium to heavy equipment

Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding

Operates cranes, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repairs

Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a closed-circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.

Gather and report work site information from inspections

Performs tasks such as pesticide application and asphalt leveling

Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment

Operates all equipment, both light and heavy in snow removal

Paints walls and materials from surface preparation to application and finishing

Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows and floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items

Uses and maintains spray painting and lawn care equipment for maintaining athletic fields

When not operating equipment, performs general laboring tasks such collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties

Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed

May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.

May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.

May supervise crew in absence of supervisor

May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.
