Job Summary:

The Maintenance Technician has the primary responsibility of mechanical and electrical machine service and repair on industrial equipment. This position also acts as a technical resource for all processing equipment. This position reports to the respective plant Lead Maintenance and takes direction from the Shift Supervisor in the absence of the Maintenance Lead.

Basic Duties and Task Statements:

Essential Functions:

  • Perform installations and debug new equipment

  • Maintain, overhaul & repair various types of equipment, systems, components, etc.

  • Preventative Maintenance on all industrial machinery

  • Troubleshoot and modify any/all industrial machinery

  • Ability to provide concise reports using CMMS programs, and related forms.

  • Assist with equipment retrofits/upgrades

  • Understanding of common mechanical principles

  • Understanding of electrical and electronic theory

  • Designing and building fixtures

  • Performs all work in accordance with established OSHA, EPA and safety regulations

  • Good attendance and punctuality required

Marginal Functions:

  • Building maintenance & repair

  • Servicing of company vehicles and forklifts

  • Engineering and tool room support

  • Maintain a neat and orderly maintenance shop

  • Miscellaneous duties as directed by supervisor

Basic Competencies and Requirements:
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required

  • A minimum of 5-7 years experience in an industrial environment required

  • Understand and read electrical schematics, machinery drawings, and pneumatic or hydraulic schematics.

  • Knowledge of mechanical drive components and systems. To include gearboxes, belts, bearings, pulleys, sheaves, bushings, and other common mechanical components.

  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic components and systems. To include valves, cylinders, flow controls, accumulators, and other common air or fluid components.

  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic components and systems. To include sensors, switches, AC/DC/Servo motors, PLC systems, PLC programs, AC 480Volt, AC120Volt, DC voltage, Servo drives, AC drives, and VFD drives.

  • Understand and skilled in the use of mechanical hand tools.

  • Understand and skilled in the use of common electrical instruments. To include multi-meters, amp probes, thermocouple testers, temperature or pressure control testing equipment, and other various instruments required to isolate electrical malfunctions.

  • Understand water systems for both chill and cooling tower water systems. To include piping, valves, and assorted fittings.

  • Understand heating systems used in ovens, and extruders.

  • Understand vacuum systems used in resin material flow from source to end use.

  • Understand Low Pressure air systems, compressors, piping, valves, flow controls, filters, and oil separators.

  • Ability to utilize a fork truck for maintenance assists requirements.

  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, tools, practices and procedures

  • Ability to work well in a team environment & motivate others within the team

  • Ability to guide and train new mechanics

  • Must identify and report hazards.

  • Must eliminate any hazard within own ability.

  • Provide roll around cabinet with common use tools to perform duties of position

  • Must be able to apply torque to wrenches and ratchets, lift tooling dies and associated parts into the machine with human and mechanical assistance.

  • Normal Dexterity & Weight Requirements (requires extensive walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing and lifting up to 60 pounds)

  • Must be able to see and read machine gauges and computer screen, 75% of the time.

  • Must be aware of and follow all safety policies, including use of personal protective equipment, lock out/tag out, housekeeping, hazardous materials, etc.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

  • The work environment can have temperatures that are both cold and high temperature depending on the work locations, and seasonable temperature variations.

Requires multiple skills across more than one trade (e.g. electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding). Work is performed with moderate supervision. Essential Functions: May assist in a variety of routine electrical maintenance activities which may include repairing and installing electrical conduit, relays, switches, fixtures, receptacles, controls, circuits and related items; replacing plugs on electrical equipment; repairing electrical equipment; troubleshooting electrical problems and/or performing other related activities. Performs or may assist in a variety of routine plumbing maintenance activities which may include installing plumbing fixtures; installing and repairing water fountain aerators; unclogging water, drainage and sewer lines; installing and repairing water heaters; replacing faucets; repairing valves on commodes, urinals and drain lines and/or performing other related activities. Performs or may assist in a variety of routine heating and air conditioning maintenance activities which may include troubleshooting problems; performing preventative maintenance on systems; inspecting boilers, chillers and air handlers; changing air compressors; inspecting coils; repairing motors and replacing bearings on shafts; changing filters and belts; checking for related electrical problems and/or performing other related activities. Performs a variety of routine carpentry activities which may include erecting walls, studs and sheet rock; repairing fascia boards; repairing roof leaks, ceiling tiles and window sills; repairing doors and locks; patching holes in walls; installing soap and paper towel dispensers; building and repairing furniture; building and repairing bookshelves and/or performing other related activities. Paints walls and/or other related interior and exterior surfaces; removes and installs wallpaper. Performs routine welding and fabrication for various projects and repairs. May assist with ensuring the secure delivery of protective inventory to the department, and oversee repairs that must be made by outside vendors. May be required to use, carry and answer their cell phone as determined by their job duties and the department head. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED and at least two (2) years of any combination of relevant education, training or experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job will be considered.
