Job Summary

Supports the FedEx Ground facility electro-mechanical maintenance effort through rudimentary operational knowledge of mechanical power transmission and/or fabrication and/or residential/commercial/industrial electrical machinery and equipment by completing preventive maintenance and repair.

Essential Functions

  • Performs assigned rudimentary preventative maintenance work according to FXG standards ensuring all instructions are followed and that each step is fully executed.

  • Demonstrates ability to follow procedures directed by work orders or higher level technicians to conduct rudimentary troubleshooting preventative maintenance and repair

  • Responds promptly to sort calls; diagnoses the failure; makes required repairs.

  • Adheres to safety standards by promoting a safe work environment through attending safety committees, training, and verifying all safety concerns are addressed.

  • May be required to work flexible schedules, including Saturdays and Sundays, and on rotating shift assignments including day-time, midnight and sunrise schedule


  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree in electrical, electronic, mechanical, or maintenance engineering technology preferred.

Minimum Experience

  • No experience required, 1 year of light industrial maintenance, such as power transmission and/or fabrication and/or residential/commercial/electrical experience preferred. Related military technical experience in electrical and/or mechanical trades will be considered equivalent to preferred light industrial experience.

Required Skills, Abilities and / or Licensure

  • Software skills, including use of Microsoft Office software and web-based applications.

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions to complete routine procedures and/or operate standard equipment.(Required)

  • Verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with immediate management. (Required)

  • Time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills necessary to work in a fast-paced environment, handling various tasks and changing priorities, while maintaining a high attention to detail and accuracy to achieve daily assignments and goals.(Required)

Airport Maintenance Workers will assist Hayward's Transportation and Engineering Department in promoting aviation safety, providing courteous and efficient service to the flying public, attracting businesses that provide a full range of aviation services, physically developing the Airport to reach its ultimate operational capacity, and creating a compatible environment with the surrounding community. DEFINITION To operate and maintain various pieces of equipment used in maintaining the airport's facilities, building and grounds; perform routine maintenance and repair duties services to airport users; respond to emergencies; and assist in enforcement of rules and regulations. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Positions assigned to this class perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks requiring knowledge of general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and related mechanical equipment. The operation of various types of light automotive equipment as a regular assignment is characteristic of this class. Essential Duties Depending upon assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following: Operates power blade, drag roller, tandem disc, street sweeper, and other related equipment used in maintaining the airport's facilities and grounds. Maintains radio contact with the Federal Aviation Administration control tower, responds to and handles emergencies on the field; notifies appropriate emergency authorities; issues Notices to Airman (NOTAMS) if warranted by calling the tower or Oakland Flight Service Station or other appropriate FAA officials in reference to hazardous operations conditions. Repairs equipment, facilities and grounds, or other related items. Performs routine maintenance of equipment including lubrication and minor repairs. Notifies airport patrons of violations of rules and regulations. Records daily log of activities. Grades shoulders of runways and taxiways. Sweeps runways and taxiways with a motorized street sweeper. Performs custodial maintenance of grounds and facilities. Performs related work as necessary. JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: * Makes, models and types of general aviation (civilian) aircraft is desirable. * Applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations pertaining to safety procedures on the ground and taxiing signals is desirable. Ability to: * Assimilate training and perform functions upon own initiative. * Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment such as power blades, flail mower, street sweeper, tandem discs, and drag rollers. * Perform moderately difficult facility and building maintenance. * Understand and follow oral and written directions. * Deal effectively and harmoniously with users, tenants and co-workers. Minimum Qualifications Experience and Education Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One year of full-time, paid general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and related mechanical equipment at an airport. Experience in the operation of motorized equipment is desirable. Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade. Licenses/Certificates: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License. Possess and maintain, or have the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire, a radio-telephone operator's license. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, a current DMV printout (obtained within the last 30 days) may be requested. The DMV printout can be obtained from your nearest DMV office.
