This position supervises the BSSH Maintenance Carpenter Shop. Responsibilities include supervises carpenter staff, installs, constructs, and repairs buildings and project components for campus operations and programs.

Carpentry work reflects professional quality work according to industry standards and meets the approval of supervisor and Plant Manager. Skill in the use of a wide variety of carpentry tools and equipment, lay flooring, complete dry wall tasks, all facets of carpentry jobs and creates project designs. Skill in changing locks, removing broken keys.

Works with minimal direct supervision and latitude making decisions related to specific carpentry jobs. This position may also be assigned responsibility to maintain and repair basic medical equipment as needed.

The Maintenance Supervisor I Carpenter working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, the BSSH Maintenance Department provides 24/7/365 on call and shift rotational coverage in support of hospital operations. Accordingly, the position is part of the Plumbing Shop weekly on-call rotation plan.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Essential Job Functions:

EJF 1: CARPENTRY REPAIRS (50%) Supervises the Carpenter Shop staff.

Ensures carpentry maintenance, repairs, or renovation activities are completed professionally and accurately. Assigned carpentry maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely manner. Responds to customer complaints related to carpenter issues in a manner that satisfies the needs of the customer.

Carpentry maintenance and repairs are conducted in accordance with applicable codes and procedures. Results produce professional quality work. Communicates with supervisor about status of projects and priorities related to plumbing needs.

Adheres to hospital and agency policies and procedures. Adheres to manufacturer's guidelines in use of equipment. Ensures comprehensive documentation of vendor service records to include specific dates, bldgs., rooms and services provided and organized documentation easy to retrieve for equipment.

EJF 2: CARPENTRY PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE (25%): Ensures that preventive maintenance is completed on all applicable work orders.

Demonstrates proper operation of equipment used in carpentry maintenance. Recognizes failures in the operation of equipment and correctly identifies causes of equipment failure. Identifies corrective actions necessary for equipment failures, i.e., lubrication, replacement parts, etc.

EJF 3: WORK ORDER MANAGEMENT (5%): Supervises and completes Work Orders as assigned and according to policies.

Supervises and ensures work orders are checked daily to prioritize tasks. Provides supervisor frequent update on status of pending or incomplete work orders. Ensures and submits completed work orders within 5 business days of completion of work.

Enters specific info on WO's to include what work was done, who was notified that work was completed, and any problems preventing completion of the work order, e.g., parts being ordered, etc. Documentation must be accurate, legible and understandable. Seeks out additional jobs when work is complete.

EJF 4: SAFETY (10%): Maintains orderly, safe and secure work area and safe job environment.

Carpenter shop is maintained orderly without overflow of trash, equipment or tools not stored, etc.; no safety hazards identified. Utilizes appropriate safety equipment during completion of carpentry tasks; adheres to safety policies and procedures. Stores and secures tools and equipment not in active use to reduce property loss, including in shop as well as on jobs outside shop area.

Hand tools, power tools, safety equipment electrical equipment, etc., are used according to industry safety standards or manufacturer's guidelines. Ensures tools, supplies, etc., are not left unattended in a patient area. Must demonstrate awareness of life safety and infection control issues identified during the course of carpentry work.

EJF 5: SUPPLIES/MATERIALS (5%): Maintains adequate stock of supplies and equipment to enable quick response to work orders.

Notifies supervisor when routine equipment or standard parts are low and proceeds with ordering. Adheres to purchasing and procurement card requirements and rules/regulations. Identifies special products or tools required for specific jobs.

Documents use of supplies or equipment on Work Orders prior to submittal, as applicable. Is proactive in identify supplies/equipment needed for specific jobs as well as to ensure the department has appropriate equipment and supplies for future jobs.

EJF 6: Continuity of Operations (COOP) (5%): Actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Is familiar with and responds to BSSH emergency or disaster situations according to specified role in the BSSH All-Hazards Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan. Works alternate shift pattern or in alternate role assignment as required to meet the needs of the emergency and ensure continuity of services for patients. Keeps emergency information in CAPPS current and accurate. Is familiar with specific roles assigned to Plant Management staff during disaster drills or evens and responds accordingly upon request.

HIPAA: Maintains confidentiality of the hospital's patient health information.

Ensures no documented violation of patient confidentiality. Ensures all tasks involving patient information are completed in a way to maintain patient confidentiality as per HIPAA and other applicable guidelines and BSSH policy and procedure.

OTHER TASKS: Performs other tasks as assigned.

Completes incidental tasks and projects to support campus operations and programs. Assists other shops with projects as assigned by supervisor. Assists with time sensitive projects to ensure the department meets time-frames.

Willingly accepts additional work in a positive and supportive manner. Additional projects are accomplished within specified time frames and in manner acceptable to supervisor. Knowledge Skills Abilities:

1.Attend work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and perform other duties as assigned.

2.Manage time, organize workload, set priorities, and carry out assigned tasks in a timely manner.

3.Perform work in a safe manner, secure tools and supplies.

4.Work cooperatively with others and deal with stressful situations in a diplomatic and tactful manner.

5.Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

6.Maintain effective relationships with Facility Management, Facility visitors, and Facility Staff Personnel.

7.Ability to continually bend, lift, twist, walk, crawl and climb ladders/stairs

8.Ability to lift at least 50lbs.

9.Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.



  1. Solve problems, make practical decisions, and use good judgment Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.

Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Self-reports to the Plant Manager and Security any traffic tickets or arrests that would affect driver eligibility. Initial Selection Criteria:

1.Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred.

2.Experience with carpentry maintenance, construction and repair.

3.Experience and education may be substituted for one another. Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza.

All these diseases are vaccine preventable. Vaccines may be provided. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals.
