Under general direction from the Facilities Construction Coordinator, the Maintenance Specialist II position for the Facilities division will perform skilled labor for construction projects varying in scope from small building repair, to new commercial buildings. Work will include general support of all Facilities Department efforts to maintain, repair, and construct new all buildings and support structures owned and operated by the Town of Blacksburg.

Shift: Monday

  • Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

  • Interprets structural and architectural drawings

  • Estimates material quantities and procures materials

  • Performs general labor using hand tools and small equipment

  • Performs basic plumbing repairs

  • Performs rough and finish carpentry and drywall installation and finishing

  • Performs masonry and concrete repairs

  • Operates equipment used in general carpentry, plumbing, painting, woodworking, framing, fabrication, drywall, masonry, roofing, insulation, footings and foundations, installation of windows, doors, and repair and replacement of locks

  • Assists with Town wide snow removal efforts

  • Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in facilities construction, maintenance, and repair

  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the standard building trade

  • Knowledge of applicable safety processes and procedures

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions accurately

  • Ability to operate construction equipment and related machinery applicable to the trade class

  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods

  • Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and associates

  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully, particularly with the public

  • This position requires effective scheduling and time management skills to execute construction projects

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED certification required
  • A combination of experience/education equivalent to 2 years of related experience

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License

  • Class B within 6 months of employment
  • May require possession of or ability to obtain specific certifications depending on area of assignment

  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 lbs. of force, lifting 50 lbs. regularly, 100 lbs. occasionally, and carrying 50 lbs. at least 100 feet and 100 lbs. at least 25 feet.

  • Work regularly requires climbing up and down ladders and in and out of dump trucks/loaders

  • Work regularly requires working within confined spaces

  • Work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands and fingers to handle or feel with repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting;

  • Work has standard vision requirements; 

  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; 

  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound

  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities

  • Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work can often be in a loud noise location
