The Maintenance Specialist I performs entry level work in the maintenance and repair of the buildings and equipment at NTSH - Vernon Campus. Work involves preparing and painting the interior and exterior of buildings, equipment, and furnishings.

Helps replace broken window glass and damaged sheet rock, and other related duties. Will work weekend rotation schedule as required. Work is performed on the Vernon Campus and may be performed on the Wichita Falls Campus as needed under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor III, Assistant Plant Maintenance Manager, and Plant Maintenance Manager.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

This position may also be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations. Essential Job Functions:

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Assist in preparing and painting the interior and exterior of buildings, equipment and furnishings.

Prepares, paints, stains and varnishes under supervision of painting supervisor for proper use.

Assists in performing limited carpenter work such as replacing broken window glass, repairing damaged sheet rock, installing signs and bulletin boards and concrete work.

Accounts for personal tool inventory by following departmental procedures to ensure safety of patients and employees.

Assists other crafts in construction or repairs of facility.

Will work weekend rotation schedule as required with tasks being done in a professional and efficient manner to ensure compliance with instructions and quality standards.

Performs other tasks as assigned.

Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Working knowledge in the operation, maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

Skill in the use of tools and equipment in a safe manner.

Ability to work with others.

Must have an acceptable driving record according to standards developed by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Must be enrolled in, or must have completed and passed, an approved six hour defensive driving course. The completion certificate will remain valid for a period of three years. Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Must have the appropriate license (Class C) for the type of vehicle being driven as required by Texas Civil Statutes. Initial Selection Criteria:

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.

Experience in building construction or maintenance preferred. Additional Information:

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza.

All these diseases are vaccine preventable. Vaccines may be provided. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
