The Maintenance Specialist I (Plumbing) performs entry-level work in maintaining and repairing buildings and equipment relating to the Plumbing Department at North Texas State Hospital

  • Wichita Falls Campus. Work involves building repair, renovation, restoration, and alteration on plumbing fixtures and mechanical equipment.

    Works under close supervision of The Maintenance Specialist III (Plumbing) and the Maintenance Supervisor IV (Plumbing). Stands emergency maintenance call on a rotating basis as scheduled. Work may be performed on the Vernon campus as needed. Reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor II (Plumbing). Actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

    Essential Job Functions: Assist in the installation of new plumbing fixtures, water lines, and waste water lines, according to the National Plumbing Code to provide a safe and healthy environment for staff and patients. Performs PM, breakdown repairs, routine maintenance and planned maintenance on plumbing fixtures and mechanical equipment to insure fixtures are kept in like new condition.

    Assists in performing maintenance on and checking for leaks in natural gas distribution systems according to code and department policies to provide a safe environment for staff and patients. Accounts for personal tool inventory by following departmental procedures to ensure safety of patients and employees. Assists the laundry maintenance specialist under the direction of the Plumbing Supervisor with repair or replacement of all laundry steam boiler accessories such as traps, regulator valves and fittings.

    Stands emergency maintenance call on a rotating basis according to Maintenance Procedures to provide needed services. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

    Knowledge Skills Abilities: 1. Basic knowledge of plumbing repair and maintenance operation techniques and safety regulations. 2. Ability to complete work orders and follows written and oral instructions. 3.

    Basic knowledge and ability to perform inspections of equipment, gas and water systems, to ensure proper maintenance and repair. 4. Must have an acceptable driving record according to standards developed by the Texas Department of Public Safety. 5. Skill in communicating both in writing and orally. 6.

    Ability to prioritize and manage tasks. 7. Basic knowledge and experience with prevailing plumbing codes. 8. Basic computer operating skills.

    Ability to use Microsoft Office products. Registration or Licensure Requirements: Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.

    Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Selection Criteria:

    High School Diploma or GED. Additional Information: Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities.

    Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

    Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required.

    According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. Vaccines may be provided.

    As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals.
