The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a Maintenance Specialist, Electrician, Journey 2/Lead position for the Highland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC) located in Eagle River, Alaska.

What you will be doing:

Under general direction of the Maintenance Lead, this position is responsible for a variety of exciting work which involves maintaining and repairing infrastructure of the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center: Install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair all electronic systems and equipment at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center. These include but are not limited to; perimeter security systems, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera systems, cable television systems, electronic doors and locks, fire protection systems, telephone and telephone voice mail systems, Intercom systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and computer networking wiring systems.

The working environment you can expect:

Hiland Mountain Correctional Center is the State of Alaska's dedicated facility for housing female prisoners. Located in Eagle River, Alaska, it is a peaceful, private, heavily wooded setting, with breathtaking views of the Chugach Mountains.

The institution includes 11 buildings, containing approximately 120,000 square feet of space. It sits on approximately 62.7 acres of land adjacent to Eagle River, Alaska. It has the capacity for approximately 400 prisoners. The facility contains 5 housing units and several common areas that require constant support and maintenance.

The hours for this position are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a thirty-minute lunch. The successful candidate will work as a member of a team to solve difficult and challenging problems with opportunities to cross-train and learn new and valuable skills.

Who we are looking for:

  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repairs on the entire facility electrical system, from the main switchboard, through all distribution equipment and panels and to all connected equipment and devices while using proper safety procedures.

  • Performs advanced diagnostics, repair, maintenance and programming on fire alarm components and systems. Installs system upgrades as required to meet facility and code requirements.

  • Install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair computer CAT5 and fiber optic cables and outlets.

  • Able to install, repair and maintain all types and styles of commercial and security grade electrical and mechanical locking devices in all types and styles of doors, door frames and gates.

Provides assistance to other maintenance staff as assigned, performing any of the tasks assigned to the maintenance career field.

  • Possess a valid driver's license issued within the United States at time of appointment.

  • Possess Electrician Journeyman Certificate.Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

Education completed in foreign colleges, universities, or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution or high school.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS

Please be aware - this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
