Under the general direction of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. This position performs a wide range of advanced maintenance tasks which may require the application of some independent judgement and mechanical knowledge related to repair functions. These tasks may include but will not be limited to, facility repairs, machine repair, plumbing, painting, air conditioning service and janitorial functions. This work primarily involves property maintenance with varying degrees of skill levels.  All work product must be performed to current codes and industry standards. This work activity includes the operation of 4000 psi pressure cleaners, vacuum cleaners, and high pressure steam cleaners, and assorted shop tools, heavy duty trucks, along with aerial devices such as ladders, bucket trucks and scaffolding.

Other tasks required in this position include, but are not limited to streetlight repair, carpentry, welding, plumbing and furniture moving. This position requires the maintenance repair worker to perform preventative maintenance activities and specific record keeping of daily work assignments. Work is reviewed by observation and by results obtained. Special or unique operational skills may generally be acquired by on-the-job-training. Maintenance Repair Workers perform other work as assigned.

  • Assists skilled trade's persons and senior employees in work their activities.  These activities may include painting, plumbing, carpentry and electrical work.
  • Maintains departmental records and invoices, reviews documents for sufficiency, obtains required signatures, maintains follow-up, and sorts items for distribution and handling.
  • Responds to questions and repair requests channeled through Facilities Maintenance Supervision.
  • Performs assorted janitorial duties on an assigned basis.
  • Works well in stressful work environments as well as emergency situations.
  • Understands and works well in team environment.
  • Responds well to moving to different job activities on short notice.   
  • Assists in the annual installation of seasonal decorations.
  • Performs departmental errands such as getting supplies and making trips to City Hall as needed.
  • Digs holes and trenches, back fills excavations, grade topsoil and rakes mulch.
  • May perform other duties unique to the department, division or program that are technical in nature.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. (Proof must be uploaded with application). 
  • Courses in building maintenance, air conditioning maintenance, painting, electrical work, plumbing, and carpentry work preferred.
  • Must achieve and maintain a valid FDOT, MUTCD certificate for traffic safety zone setup within six (6) months of employment.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: 

  • This position requires a Class B CDL with Air Brake Endorsement. Applicants who do not currently possess a Class "B" CDL with air brake endorsement must acquire a learner's permit within 3 months of hire and obtain the license within 6 months of hire. Applicants who possess an out of state driver's license must obtain the Florida license within 10 days of employment.
  • Demonstrable skill and knowledge in a wide variety of maintenance disciplines.
  • Demonstrable ability to read and interpret working drawings, blueprints, schematics and written instruction.
  • Demonstrable ability to layout a maintenance/repair projects that includes preparation and completion in an efficient and productive fashion.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of power hand tools as well as standard workshop equipment.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Basic English, spelling and arithmetic.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports from such records.
  • Ability to understand and communicate the policies, procedures, and services of the department, division or program.
  • Demonstrable ability to operate a variety of modern floor mounted and handheld power tools.  This equipment includes, but is not limited to, bucket trucks, power hand saws, table saws, electrical test equipment, vacuum gauges, leak detectors, air compressors, and pneumatic hand tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, other City employees and the general public.
  • Demonstrable skill working safely with neatness, accuracy and speed.

Physical and Mental Requirements: 

  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to see and read correspondence of all sizes.
  • Ability to hear and understand conversations at all levels and rate of speed.
  • Ability to print or use cursive writing, recognize and write letters, numbers, symbols, and words that are easily understood.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment which requires the use of fingers, hands, and wrists, to safely operate tools such as electric hand drills, drill presses, sewer cleaning equipment as well as assorted hand tools.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to learn and remember facts relating to departmental processes with little instruction.
  • Ability to sit or squat for long periods of time not to exceed 2 hours consecutively.
  • Ability to lift and carry items not to exceed 60 lbs., also may require ability to bend, kneel or squat while doing so.
  • Ability to deal with mental stress related to dealing with injured or angry people.
  • Ability to work in undesirable conditions which may consist of dust and dirt, fumes, odors, wet environments and loud noise condition.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from scaffolding.
  • Ability to climb ladders while carrying hand tools and or repair material.
  • Ability to rig and tie material to be handled by humans or mechanical equipment such as winches and bucket trucks.
  • Ability to work for extended periods with arms and hands overhead.
  • Ability to hold and support items weighing up to 50 lbs. while installing or removing segments of machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to work in confined, close or tight spaces such as crawl spaces and attics for short to moderate periods of time.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call out at unusual hours for events such as storm preparation and recovery or streetlight damage caused by vehicle accidents.
  • Ability to work while laying on one's back in confined spaces such as under plumbing fixtures and cabinets.
  • Ability to lift one's own weight sufficiently to lift one's body into and out of bucket trucks and roof tops.
  • Ability to work overtime, both on a call out basis and as shift work, through to finish emergency repair projects.
  • Ability to work on roof tops up to 50 feet above the ground while carrying or rigging material to be placed or removed from structures.
