EXAMINATION PROCESS-May contain some or all of the components below: Training and Experience Evaluation

  • Pass/Fail Applications will be screened for best qualified applicants to compete in the competitive examination process. General Fitness Exam

  • Date TBD The General Fitness Exam will consist of an on-line multiple choice examination assessing fundamental knowledge for the position. Performance Examination

  • Date TBD The Performance Examination will assess fundamental knowledge and ability for this trade. Structured Oral Interview

  • Date TBD The Structured Oral Interview will be before a panel and contain questions that assess technical knowledge, experience, and one's general fitness for successful performance in the position. A total score will be computed using weighted scores on all testing components.

    Applicants must receive a passing score on each examination to be placed on the six (6) months long eligibility list. The top 3 ranks (scores) on the eligibility list are eligible for the hiring interview for each vacancy in this classification within the life of the list. Perform a variety of highly-skilled plumbing activities involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems in District buildings and facilities; maintain District plumbing lines in safe and sanitary working condition; assure compliance with building codes applicable to the plumbing trade.

    Install, maintain and repair pipes, washers, gaskets, faucets, floats, valves, control devices, pumps, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains and other fixtures, parts and equipment; replace leaking and defective parts in plumbing fixtures and systems; replace equipment and fixtures as needed. Maintain and repair steam and hot water boilers, heaters and heating systems; replace heating system pipes, test for and repair gas leaks, and repair safety controls; install a variety of fixtures used to provide hot potable water including water heaters, boilers, pumps, pipes, valves, clocks and relays. Inspect and repair water leaks and general system failures; troubleshoot and resolve highly complex plumbing system problems and malfunctions; test plumbing system operations and inspect, diagnose and resolve plumbing problems in bathrooms, kitchens, classrooms and other District facilities.

    Clean out drains and remove obstructions from water and sewer lines, systems, pumps, toilets, urinals and drinking fountains; repair or replace damaged water and sewer pipes, fittings and lines; rebuild and replace valves and faucets; install, test and maintain backflow devices. Estimate labor, material and equipment needed or assigned projects; prepare cost estimates; monitor inventory levels of materials and equipment; order, receive and maintain adequate inventory of materials and equipment. Plan, organize and lay out assigned tasks; interpret diagrams, blue prints, sketches and specifications; prepare rough drafts of projects; work from verbal and written instructions and work orders.

    Maintain and repair fire sprinkler systems and related lines, pipes, valves, sprinklers, controllers, pumps and other components and equipment. Participate in Department-wide projects and assist other trades workers with maintenance and repair projects as needed. Perform preventive maintenance inspections and servicing on plumbing systems and equipment.

    Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. Maintain work areas, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition Maintain various records related to work orders, projects, backflow tests and assigned activities.

    Attend and participate in various trainings and in-services. Education/Experience Completion of a recognized Plumber Apprenticeship program and four (4) years of journey-level experience. Licenses/Certifications/Special Requirements Valid California Class Driver's License, which would permit the incumbent to drive a district vehicle to conduct work.

    Backflow Testing Certification Remain, insurable under the District's vehicle driver's insurance policy at the standard rate. Alternate variations of education/experience that would likely yield the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered as acceptable in meeting minimum entrance requirements to qualify for participation in the examination process. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:

    The tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the plumbing trade; The proper repair and operation of heating equipment and boilers; Applicable plumbing codes and regulations governing the plumbing trade; Shop math; Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Ability to: Perform skilled plumbing installation, repair and maintenance work; Use plumbing tools and equipment with skill; Plan and lay out plumbing work, including estimating labor and material cost; Work from sketches, diagrams, blueprints, plans and specifications; Maintain simple records; Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work; Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
