As a maintenance operator, you will: ?respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions ?attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control ?demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely ?participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects ?complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment. VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

You are minimally qualified if you have: ?knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs ?knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods ?demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities ?ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs ?skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools ?ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter ?ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred qualifications include: ?valid CDL ?experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation ?experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs ?experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up ?High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
