Maintenance Mechanic

  • Maintains the safe operation and maintenance of building facilities, electrical and mechanical systems and plumbing.

  • Is responsible for operating and maintaining specific equipment, conducting surveys and inventories, performing preventive maintenance activities, responding to customer complaints and repairing equipment.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, schematics and written technical machinery documents to troubleshoot areas and make repairs accurately.

  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulations, policies and procedures.

  • May perform daily chemical tests on water systems and adjust chemical mixtures and feed rates.

  • Installs wall hung furnishings and equipment.

  • Maintains related computer databases.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

Sr. Maintenance Mechanic Additional Description

  • Operates and maintains building facilities, systems and equipment related to plumbing, electricity, HVAC, and steam control.

  • Operates and maintains building equipment and systems such as vacuum systems, control air systems, building air systems, emergency generators, electrical distribution systems, liquid pumping systems, steam, air handling systems, hot/cold water systems and natural gas and fuel oil systems.

  • Assigns and schedules work.

  • Orients and trains staff. Provides guidance to staff to ensure work orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Maintains required record-keeping.


  • Completion of a related technical school program, OR a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in building maintenance, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural and general carpentry.

  • Positions in this classification may require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.

  • Some positions within this classification may require the ability to lift 50 pounds and to bend, stoop and twist.

Sr. Maintenance Mechanic Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • Sr. Maintenance Mechanic Requires 3 years of experience in in Commercial/industrial building maintenance, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Hands-on proficiency with commercial HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, structural and general carpentry.

  • Working knowledge of computer or mobile applications.

  • Ability to conduct hands-on training for others.

Additional Details

Higher Education or Healthcare Maintenance experience preferred.

Ensures that facilities, including equipment and grounds (where applicable), are maintained in a safe and aesthetically pleasing condition to provide an environment appropriate for the wellbeing of patients, visitors, and staff. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. EDUCATION * High school diploma or equivalent CERTIFICATION SUMMARY * No professional certifications required EXPERIENCE* 2 years of experience in general maintenance related to building systems and equipment as found in hospitals PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS* * NA KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES* * Must have a good working knowledge of electricity, plumbing, heating/ventilation/air conditioning, and commercial carpentry * Must be able to read blueprints * Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills * Must be able to work without direct supervision JOB RESPONSIBILITIES* * Performs corrective and planned maintenance on all facility properties, such as non-patient care and building systems equipment. * Keeps accurate, legible records of all work performed in accordance with department policies and procedures. * Receives and obtains materials according to departmental procedures and observes proper onsite handling of equipment and materials in compliance with system policies and procedures, infection control, safety, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations. * Communicates and works directly with supervisors and management, clinical personnel, patients, and other staff to ensure that an optimum patient care and business environment is provided. * Maintains good public relations by responding professionally and promptly to the needs of all customers. * Meets all in-service requirements per system and department policy. * Demonstrates an understanding and support of family-centered care philosophy while supporting and participating in the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided. SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES* Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system. Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
