The Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings and Grounds, Facilities Support Division, Fort Meade Operations and Maintenance Branch is looking for an expert Maintenance Mechanic. The mechanic will perform a variety of duties including maintenance, repair and installation of commercial/industrial air conditioning and heating systems, plumbing systems, fire sprinkler systems and electrical systems.

TOUR OF DUTY: Tuesday through Saturday

  • 7:00 am to 3:30 pm
  • The incumbent of this position is designated as "Emergency / Essential" and will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather conditions. *
  • The wage rate schedules for the Washington, District of Columbia pay. *
  • Major duties and responsibilities include the following:

Air Conditioning System Maintenance and Repair

Designs, lays out, and installs HVAC units. Installs and removes supply, return, and exhaust ducts. Lays out and designs routing, size, type and gauge for HVAC systems. Operates, maintains and troubleshoots malfunctions in equipment and systems. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance functions on chillers, boilers, cooling towers and pumps.

Adjusts, maintains, repairs and troubleshoots electronic and Direct Digital Controls (DDCs) including air handler units, electronic dampers, electronic valves, variable speed drives and Variable Air Volume systems.

Electrical Maintenance, Repair and Troubleshooting

Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests, and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Works with secondary power distribution lines and circuits. Maintains, installs and repairs electrical circuits and equipment during construction, maintenance or renovation of buildings, offices and workshops.

Plumbing System Repairs

Plans, lays out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operations of feed and drain systems and equipment using blueprints, building plans, and sketches. Installs new systems and modifies and repairs exiting utility, supply, and disposal systems. Inspects and maintains sprinkler system fire and booster (jockey) pumps to confirm that proper system pressure is available.

Fire Protection Systems

Performs monthly fire extinguisher inspections. Inspects, operates and maintains commercial building fire alarm detection/notification systems. Impairs and restores system alarm points warranted by work project requests and maintenance and renovation completion status.

Responsible for environmental waste management.

Travel Required

Occasional travel

  • Periodic travel to Washington DC and Culpeper VA

Essential Duties and Responsibilities * Performs general maintenance and repairs of installed equipment and systems to include all aspects of plumbing, compressed gas systems, pumps, compressors, blowers, fans and electrical motors * Performs or assists in the performance of the following: rebuilding pumps and compressors, replacing bearings and seals, repairing or replacing plumbing systems or components, installing treaded or sweated pipe segments, repairing or replacing refrigeration components, and performing maintenance of installed irrigation systems * Performs preventative maintenance as assigned * Maintains the general cleanliness and appearance of assigned spaces * Performs other duties as assigned Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements * A minimum of five (5) years of experience performing the work of a maintenance mechanic of which two (2) years shall be in a medical treatment facility * Experience with a Facility Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software highly desired * General knowledge of hand and power tools * Excellent written and oral communication skills * Knowledge of computer software programs to include Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook required. * Must be able to successfully pass a government background screen for admittance to jobsite * High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certificate in related field preferred Physical, Environmental and Sensory Requirements * Regular exposure to extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid conditions, electric shock, moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles, loud noises, chemicals, etc. * Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, reaching, and use of hands; regularly lifting and/or moving up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. * Requires use of hand and power tools applicable to trade * Ability to maneuver a job site, including small spaces in around our equipment * Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus This job description is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.
