PRIMARY FUNCTION

  • Performs mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of water meters of varying size and complexity. Repairs disc and compound‑type water meters using manual tools and machine shop equipment. Work involves the performance of skilled and semi‑skilled mechanical tasks, which vary in type and complexity according to repairs required.

  • Acts as a job foreman in the field when labor force is being used. Work is performed independently of supervision.

    Assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions, rough sketches, or simple blueprints from the Meter Supervisor. Work is subject to periodic inspection while in process and upon completion.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintenance work of average difficulty in performing duties pertaining to various size meters, valves, and water appurtenances.

  • Disassembles malfunctioning water meters, replacing parts, cleaning and reconditioning as necessary. Disassembles large industrial meters replacing non‑serviceable parts, making necessary adjustments for ensuring proper operation. Changes industrial meters when needed ‑ 3" to 6". Replaces or repair parts of meters varying in sizes from 5/8 inch to 2 inches.

  • Replaces old pipe for in‑ground meters when needed. Operation and repair of pressure regulators in the system.

    Locating stop boxes so water may be turned on or shut off at the curb area. Removal of meters and turning off water at curb area for unoccupied properties. Resetting of meters and turning on water for re‑occupied properties.

  • Change and install meters at place of operation, operate centrifugal water pumps and all type of pipe wrenches, cutting, and manipulation of copper tubing. Work with different sizes of pipefittings and valves. Install meters and test them to see if they are operating correctly.

  • Install replacement ERT's and remote the location of ERT's on site to successfully read water meters via mobile reading equipment. Sketch out work for installation of curb meters and once approved, install them. Work involves the testing of ERT's with a handheld reader for verification of meter reading functions.

  • Tests meters for leakage and accurate functioning of slow rates. Makes volume comparison tests of large water meters installed in industrial plants or other large buildings.

  • Operates pipe threading machine, power buffer, and drill press, or other power equipment for the use of making repairs to water meters.

  • Makes weekly reports on work accomplished. Performs all related work as required.

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with a good driving record. Must be able to work standby (compensation provided) or overtime as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from high school, vocational technical, or GED equivalent. Experience in the assembly and disassembly of metering devices; or any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and tools necessary to maintain and repair various sized water meters. Knowledge in the care and use of various hand tools and machine shop tools used in the maintenance of meters, valves, pipes, and copper tubing.

    Skilled in the care of and use of tools and equipment used in the maintenance of meters, valves, and meter appurtenances. Knowledge of methods used in the operation and maintenance of pumps. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in working in meter pit and maintenance of mechanical equipment.

  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Ability to make simple arithmetic computations. A good attitude in dealing with the public daily.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Regularly work in outside weather conditions. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations.

    Occasionally works in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

  • Regularly required to use hands to fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Skilled in performing tasks requiring mechanical dexterity.

    Frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test.

City residency is required within one (1) year of employment.
