DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The purpose of the Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is to provide solid waste services to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal, and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound, and cost-effective. The selected individual will perform routine maintenance activities to provide safe and clean equipment, facilities, and grounds. Inspect and perform minor repairs to pumps, motors, plumbing, drains, and other facility equipment. May fabricate and weld various parts. Drives to and from various SWMD work sites. Troubleshoots equipment issues and makes recommendations for repairs. Expected to provide a clean and safe work area at all times. Must provide your own safety shoes. May be responsible for maintaining proper lawn care. This position is also critical in providing oil and hazardous spill clean-up/prevention duties due to spills created by the Refuse Trucks on the City streets. An acceptable clear driving record is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make rapid closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within somewhat fine tolerance demands; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fine tolerances with large equipment as an extension of the worker. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required. Must have a valid Texas driver's license and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of experience in building or mechanical maintenance is required.
LICENSE
Must have a valid Texas driver's license in compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP2-2). A Commercial Driver's License is a plus. Welding experience is a plus.
The selection process will involve application review and/or interview. Department may administer skills assessment test.

If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
PAY GRADE - 14
