As a Maintenance "Mechanic" Assistant Manager, you will perform a variety of tasks related to ensuring team members properly maintain all zoo rides, fleet vehicles, and zoo facilities.



  • Manage the maintenance technician staff, responsible for staff performance management, evaluation, providing ongoing feedback regarding levels of performance, selection of new employees as well as employee onboarding.

  • Responsible for delegating workflow of the maintenance technician team including but not limited to the following tasks, weekly customer service walks, work order completion, preventative maintenance support, emergency call triage, procurement support, and field contractor management.

  • Conducts daily pre-opening quality control inspections of all zoo rides, fleet vehicle, and ride facilities.

  • Manage the team members

  • Conducts routine daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly ride PM's (including lubrication)

  • Ensures all safety procedures are understood and followed by providing up to date safety training to all employees.

  • Enforces all safety regulations and stay current with safety rules and procedures.

  • Act collaboratively and effectively within a cross-functional operations leadership team with overlapping responsibilities and common in-park goals.

  • Effectively communicates information to team members as well as all levels of leadership.

  • Maintaining all fleet vehicle zoo ride annual inspections, certifications, and maintenance.

  • Monitors and maintains an inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.

  • Assist in training employees on the proper use of commercial equipment, tools, and chemicals; including, but not limited to forklifts, bobcat, drills, hand, and power tools.

  • Constantly exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.

  • Be fully committed to the mission of San Antonio Zoo to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wild world we steward and animals we protect.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Secondary Functions

  • Ability to handle conflict resolution professionally.

  • Attain ride certifications on train and carousel within 3 months of employment.

  • Safely operate zoo vehicles according to Standard Operating Procedures

  • Must be flexible and can multi-task in a fast pace environment while maintaining a positive attitude with the public.

  • Support the creation of a cohesive team while demonstrating organizational, planning, delegation, mentoring and coaching skills.

  • Collaborate with Human Resources to continuously develop professional training, develop and promote all teams' members through individual performance planning.

  • Must comply with all applicable Occupational Safety Health Association Standards

  • Ensure facilities team follows city code compliance.

  • Ability to research different contractors and/or suppliers to obtain the best cost for services.

  • Collaborate with event organizers during special and/or catered events.

  • Monitor hourly breaks and lunches to prevent work overtime violations

  • In the absence of the Department Manager, the Facilities Assistant Manager will oversee the department's personnel.


  • Two years of supervisory experience.

  • Must have 2 years vehicle mechanic experience

  • Ability to push/pull up to 75lbs and lift to 30lbs without assistance

  • Able to read, comprehend, and follow orders, written and oral instructions.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to handle conflict resolution professionally.

  • Ability to work under pressure while being detail-oriented.

  • Computer skills include Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.

  • This position requires a valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License or a valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 45 days of becoming employed.

  • We enjoy year-round hours for all staff, must be available nights, weekends and occasional after-hour assignments.
