As a skilled mechanic, this position plays a critical role in inspecting and maintaining approximately sixty (60) fish screen facilities  and several fish ways along the South Area route, covering vital tributaries like the Yakima, Walla Walla, and Touchet rivers. Your work ensures that these facilities meet WDFW and NOAA Fisheries biological protection standards. From fabricating metal products to operating heavy equipment like excavators and dump trucks, you'll be involved in all phases of construction and maintenance, helping to protect fish populations and their habitats.

What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic will…

Conduct inspections, operation and maintenance of fish screens and fish ways which might include:

  • Seals inspection and/or replacement
  • Debris accumulation removal
  • Cleaning systems' functionality 
  • Sediment removal
  • Work under journey level trades worker or work independently (with training) to inspect and maintain proper operating criteria for fish screens.
  • Diagnose and repair or replace component screen parts such as electric motors, gear reduction boxes, drive chains, sprockets, and other parts as needed.

Working Conditions: 

Work Setting, including hazards: Work is performed on rough terrain in all weather conditions. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Work requires employee to bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, and lift 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.

Schedule: 6:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, occasional 8-day workweeks including weekends, overtime as needed.

Travel Requirements: Travel required.

Tools and Equipment: Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, and/or powered motors; automotive equipment and trailers, heavy equipment; backhoe, excavators, etc.

Customer Interactions: Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers, Irrigation Districts/Water Users, and vendors.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 

Option 1: High School Diploma or equivalent and completion of recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade 

Option 2: High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in mechanical repair work as a fulltime helper to a journey level mechanic. 

Required job knowledge: 

  • Accepted practices, processes, materials, and tools of the maintenance trades.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building maintenance trades.
  • Equipment assembly, installation, repairs, etc.
  • Materials and technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic), general.
  • Materials and technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic), construction.

Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver's license.
