Starting salary for this position is: $4,602 (Monthly).

Employees starting at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. If an employee starting at anything higher than the entry step of the range, will have salary step advancement after 12 months and salary step advancement every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase in salary.

This region includes all of Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry, and Pend Oreille Counties as well as portions of Lincoln County.

The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of HVAC in Training in the Facilities Department.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Trades Supervisor, this position performs a variety of skilled trades at a journey level. With an emphasis on HVAC, constructing, maintaining, modifying, or repairing HVAC system components including chillers, boilers, valves, and other items at Spokane Community College (SCC).

This position responds to calls and work orders on HVAC issues to evaluate issues and make necessary repairs. The position will monitor control systems and perform skilled work in the inspection, testing, installation and repair of piping and plumbing equipment and related HVAC components.

This is an in-training position that allows the employee to progress from the Maintenance Mechanic 2 classification to the HVAC Technician classification by demonstrating competencies and qualifications as defined in the in-training plan. If the employee does not successfully complete the in-training plan resulting in progression to an HVAC Technician within two years, this position will be terminated.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance on buildings' HVAC equipment including air handlers, VAV boxes, valves, pumps, and motors. Change filters on HVAC equipment, compressors, boilers, cooling towers, etc. documenting all work. Travel to off-site campus locations as needed to perform HVAC related work. Evaluate heating and cooling problems, diagnose and make necessary repairs to HVAC equipment and systems. *
  • Install new control components including valves, actuators, sensors, and document HVAC control modifications at completion of projects. May need to coordinate with administrators, contractors, and other trades in implementing projects. *
  • Develop cost estimates for repairs and upgrades. Purchase supplies and equipment for HVAC projects. *
  • Maintain CCS building HVAC control programs and systems. Make changes to control programs as needed. Become proficient in the use of computerized energy management systems and software. *
  • Maintain and repair piping, tanks and pressure vessels for fuels, steam, water, air, gas, and draining systems; clean and repair drains; and install new plumbing components for HVAC systems. *
  • Read and evaluate building plans and specifications. *
  • Assist other trades in the completion of maintenance and upgrade projects as directed. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *
  • Indicates this is an essential duty.

This position is designated a bargaining unit position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Heating Mechanic 1 license.

  • EPA Refrigerant license.

  • Washington State 06A Electrical license or equivalent out-of-state license.

  • Knowledge of HVAC and Electrical codes.

  • Knowledge of building codes.

  • Ability to work independently or in a team.

  • Ability to set work priorities.

  • Knowledge of chemicals and Safety Data Sheets.

  • Ability to read and understand instructions on Safety Data Sheets.

  • Ability to use computers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • City of Spokane Gas Mechanics II license.

  • Experience working in higher education or general government.

  • Ability to perform HVAC and control repairs specific to the colleges and district.

  • Ability to understand colleges and district controls layout and needs.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

TOTAL COMPENSATION WITH BENEFITS: $75,667 - $86,053.

Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:

  • Base compensation of $55,224 - $64,092, plus

  • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus

The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1-B visa. In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is equally performed in an indoor office environment and outdoor uncontrolled elements.

  • Move up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.

  • Work is active.

  • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation.

  • Operates and controls movement of power tools and/or large mechanized, powered and non-powered equipment.

  • Frequent kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing and twisting.

  • Enter, crouch, twist, work and climb in and out of confined spaces.

  • Extension of arms overhead for sustained periods.

  • Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, and/or odors.

  • Respiratory equipment used that may require adherence to applicable safety rules and standards.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Full-time schedule (12-month, 40-hours a week).

  • 6-month probationary period.

  • This position is overtime eligible.

  • Requires local or regional travel using CCS vehicles.

  • Valid motor vehicle operator license is required.

  • Criminal background check is required.

  • May be required to work alternate shift.

  • This is an in-training position. If the employee does not successfully complete the in-training plan resulting in progression to an HVAC Technician within two years, this position will be terminated.
