JOB TITLE: Maintenance Mechanic
DEPARTMENT: Facilities Engineering, Georgia Military College
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing maintenance and repair duties in campus buildings.
Installs and maintains electrical wiring and fixtures by repairing or replacing switches, lighting receptacles. And electrical controls.
Maintains plumbing systems by repairing or replacing fixtures, pipes, and drainage systems
Performs rough and finished carpentry work, designs, builds and maintains wooden structures.
Performs masonry work, including repairing walls.
Selects, installs, maintains and repairs heating and air-conditioning systems.
Installs and repairs door locks.
Fabricates and welds parts.
Maintains an adequate inventory of parts and materials needed for repairs, orders supplies as needed.
Purchases materials needed for maintenance projects.
Provides support for campus events.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools of the electrical, carpentry, masonry and plumbing trades.
Knowledge of the operation and repair of HVAC systems.
Skill in reading blueprints.
Skill in using a variety of hand and bench tools.
Skill in fabricating and welding parts.
Skill in performing plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, HVAC and painting maintenance and repair work.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions which require the use of some judgment. The supervisor reviews completed work for compliance with codes for the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include fire, building, electrical, and plumbing codes, and work orders. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and HVAAC maintenance and repair. The variety of tasks to be completed contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain campus electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems on the campus. Successful performance creates a safe and comfortable working and learning environment.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors and other school employees.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve, problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, use tools requiring a high degree of dexterity, climb ladders, and distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIROMENT: The work is performed in campus building and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and inclement weather. The use of protective devices such as gloves, goggles or masks is required.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Must have a valid driver's license.
