This is the advanced level maintenance mechanic responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting mechanical equipment and electrical systems, including power plant and security equipment, as well as maintaining grounds in a large physical plant complex. This position also serves as a crew leader and trainer of inmates.

WHV is a multi-level women's correctional facility. This position is located outside of the secure perimeter of the facility. However, the position works most hours inside the secure facility and has direct contact with inmates at least 50% of each day. This is a drug and alcohol test designated position.

Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9.

Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for Some positions in this job series may be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.

Some positions in this job series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the commercial driver's license issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.  All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
