The Opportunity: This position will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and will be required to independently perform semi-skilled work in areas such as, but not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical for the Facilities department at the Mount Vernon Campus.

This is a full-time classified position at the Mount Vernon Campus.   Hours of work are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Location: Skagit Valley College is on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish People's, especially on Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, Samish Indian Nation, Nooksack Indian Tribe, and Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe. Located in a geographically diverse region between the dynamic metropolitan hubs of Seattle and Vancouver, BC, SVC is never far from world-class outdoor recreation, urban arts scenes, and local cultural events.   • Work independently on semi-skilled maintenance assignments throughout the campus;

  • Work under the technical direction of journey level workers in plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other trades on occasion;

  • Maintain irrigation and sprinkler systems, programming controllers, and winterizing;

  • Repair and remodel buildings, frame walls, hang and finish sheetrock, patch holes in walls, paint;

  • Repair and/or replace electric wall heaters, electric stoves, under-counter microwave ovens and perform other electrical work as assigned;

  • Repair and/or replace toilets, sinks, faucets, garbage disposals and perform other plumbing assignments;

  • Rebuild cabinets and perform other carpentry work as assigned;

  • Change filters and perform periodic maintenance on HVAC systems;

  • Repair and/or replace indoor and outdoor light fixtures, change bulbs and ballasts;

  • Respond to campus emergency repair requests;

  • Perform building inspections to identify maintenance issues;

  • Prioritize work orders and complete assignments with minimal supervision;

  • Respond to emails, check for work orders on Megamation maintenance management software;

  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies;

  • Pick up campus garbage and deliver to solid waste facility;

  • Move or rearrange classroom furniture and equipment and move and set up furniture for special events;

  • Perform the duties of Maintenance Mechanic for District-wide projects on an occasional basis;

  • Perform the duties of a Maintenance Custodian when needed.

  • Navigate a work order management system on a daily basis to accurately describe and report labor and material resources utilized.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge or understanding of:

  • Safety standards, rules and procedures;

  • Applicable local, federal, and state building and compliance codes;

  • HVAC and mechanical standard procedures and practices;

  • Principles of HVAC and refrigeration system operations;

  • Basic plumbing, codes and standard practices;

  • Basic electrical concepts, codes and standard practices;

  • Carpentry compliance codes and standard practices;

  • Painting safety practices;  

  • Mechanical work;

  • Routine maintenance procedures.

Skilled in:

  • Performing maintenance and mechanic work; communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, students and staff;

  • Skilled in researching and diagnosing a problem and repairing, fixing or solving the problem in a satisfactory manner.

Ability to:

  • Apply appropriate skills in trades such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, etc.

  • Read blueprints and appropriate manuals;

  • Use tools and equipment related to the particular trades.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or GED; 
  • 2 years of full-time experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work; 
  • Possession of a valid Washington State motor vehicle operator's license and Insurance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Possession of Washington State Pesticide License within the first year.

  • Salary is based on Range 44, Step G, $4,410 per month with periodic increments to $4,987 per month. Salary placement is typically made at the starting salary for the range. Placement higher in the range may be considered for qualifications and experience. Salary and benefits are subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.

  • This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • This is a union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
