Whatcom Bays Area Maintenance staff is responsible for facilities and equipment maintenance for 3 of the Northern most State parks in Washington, from the Canadian Border at Peace Arch Historical State Park, a formal day use park to Birch Bay State Park just south on the water's edge in Birch Bay. This park is a day use and campground with 167 campsites. The area continues to South Bellingham on Chuckanut Dr. to Larrabee State Park which is also a day use and campground park.

Under the general supervision by the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor for Whatcom Bays Area, this position independently performs a variety of responsibilities that include general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties. This position will utilize a working knowledge of several related skills, such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, and machinist work. This position will also install, repair, inspect, maintain physical facilities (i.e., buildings, facilities, and grounds), machinery, and equipment, and vehicles within the Whatcom Bays Area.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform general work in maintenance, repair, remodel, and alteration in construction and maintenance of area facilities, ground, vehicles, and equipment.

  • Performs regular maintenance on all the Whatcom Bays Area small equipment and vehicles.

  • Perform preventative maintenance to park buildings and other park facilities.

  • Maintain and repair irrigation, plumbing, and sewage systems with the ability to provide minor electrical repairs.

  • Coordinate with management, other employees, volunteers and correctional crews during maintenance and repair projects.

  • Maintain health and safety standards.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.

AND

  • Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working State Parks or similar parks and recreation entity.

  • Entry level experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and equipment.

  • Experience leading and/or supervising lower-level staff.

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office products, such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.

  • Knowledge and experience working with various hand & power tools.

UNIFORM INFORMATION:

All Maintenance Mechanic 1 employees are required to wear a uniform. A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Maintenance Mechanic and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee. All Maintenance Mechanic 1s will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years. Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.
