The Maintenance Manager is to provide professional leadership and direction to Vale's maintenance services department based on industry best practices and established principles of reliability centered maintenance. The maintenance Manager is responsible for compliance to EP's standardized maintenance processes, managing costs, safe and effective execution of maintenance activities, and coordination between operations, support groups, and senior leadership. The role embraces a strong commitment to safety as a core value and ensures compliance with all applicable Federal/State Regulations and EP Minerals Health/Safety/Environmental practices and procedures.

Job Functions:

Safe Work Practices

  • Ensure safe maintenance practices, systems, and processes are followed and comply with all federal, state & MSHA regulations and standards.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce risk through continuous improvement activities.

  • Promote a culture of safe work practices which emphasizes personal awareness, responsibility, and ownership.

Production (Quality and Quantity)

  • Understand team goals, business context, and dynamics to efficiently translate management decisions into clear targets and longer-term plans.

  • Instill a culture of employee and contractor ownership in the care and operation of the Vale facility.

  • Be proactive in evaluating, prioritizing, and overseeing execution of engineering and maintenance projects.

  • Work with the Production Superintendent to ensure that all processing equipment performs according to Standard Operating Procedures as needed to meet customer demand.

Mobile Equipment

  • Coordinate the repair and replacement of all mobile equipment used in the shipping and packaging areas. Equipment includes forklifts, man-lifts, scissor-lifts, light duty maintenance vehicles, and any other equipment required to meet plant operational objectives.

Plant Upgrades

  • Ensure that all plant upgrades and installation of equipment are completed according to schedule, within budgetary guidelines, and in accordance with capital management policies and procedures.

Training and Development

  • Work with Human Resources and Operations to develop and facilitate training programs that provide depth and versatility for all new and advancing maintenance employees. Identify training and development needs, develop plans and establish performance metrics to meet those needs, and provide ongoing assessment tools to ensure desired results are being achieved.

Staffing and Employment

  • Oversee the maintenance department's staffing function with the support of Human Resources, including interviewing, hiring, training and development to retain and develop the best talent for the organization.

Employee Relations

  • Support supervisors and encourage collaboration among the team.

  • Support a work environment that provides leadership, coaching, and motivates personnel, contracted partners and other department's cooperation among cross functional work groups.

  • Promote open communications throughout the department and with other work groups.

  • Engage in professional interactions with peers and senior managers.

  • Establish and maintain relationships based on trust, not being afraid of difficult discussions, proactively solving conflicts if needed and leading required changes.

Cost Management

  • Monitor month-to-date and year-to-date maintenance and capital expenses for the Vale plant and implement corrective actions to achieve company targets.

  • Prepare and present the annual maintenance and capital budgets for review by the senior leadership team.

  • Monitor and maintain the plant maintenance inventory levels based on part(s) criticality and planning needs.

  • Ensure company inventory control and cycle counting policies and procedures are adhered to.

Maintenance practices

  • Strive to achieve maximum efficiency, improve reliability and MTBF, reduce process and work flow interruptions and instill continuous improvement throughout the maintenance processes.

  • Promote and hold team members accountable to proper work management practices in accordance with company standards and policies. Including but not limited to proper and consistent use of the work order process, maintenance inventory usage, work place exams, and preventive maintenance inspections.

  • Ensure that all preventive and predictive maintenance plans are in accordance with the needs of all process machinery and facility assets; moreover, that these activities are planned and scheduled via the computerized maintenance management system. (CMMS)

  • Facilitate the execution of short-duration, routine process outages according to the approved maintenance schedule.

  • Engage the team in continuous improvement and root-cause analysis activities to continue to improve process reliability and availability.

  • Ensure rail car maintenance is completed according to policy and to the customer's satisfaction.

  • Supports ongoing RCM and Precision Maintenance training, activities and processes.

  • Available to take calls and work extended hours during shutdowns and other times as needed.

  • Manages MOC's within the maintenance department.

  • Track, maintain, and report on maintenance services performance according to standardized company performance indicators.

  • Manager with Direct Reports (Responsible for Hiring, Discipline, Training, Performance, etc.) 6 Direct; 13 Indirect Reports



  • Bachelors' Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred

  • Certification in lean / six sigma preferred but not required

Job Skills/Experience:

  • 5+ years of maintenance management / leadership experience in a manufacturing environment with 10+ years of maintenance experience

  • 3+ years industrial maintenance experience working with, fans, material handling equipment (screw conveyors / bucket elevators / airlocks / belt conveyors / pneumatic conveying systems) 480-volt electrical distribution

  • Experience with precision maintenance techniques and their practical application

  • Experience with principles related to reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and 5S

  • Experience with principles related to lean / six sigma

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Experience with CMMS systems computer skills (entering work hours, work orders, parts usage, etc.)

  • Experience with IFS systems preferred but not required.

  • Experience with precision maintenance techniques and their practical application

  • Good computer knowledge including strong understanding of Windows, Microsoft Office 2010, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Good organization skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to follow through on customer requests and other customer issues is a must

  • Mathematical Skills:
    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong technical and troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude

  • Strong attention to detail


  • Comply with all corporate policies and the Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) while working.

  • Work with a high degree of autonomy in a dynamic environment

  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, blue prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and one-line diagrams

  • Communicate clearly and concisely in written and verbal form. Able to work effectively with supervisors and other personnel

  • Speak effectively to suppliers, contractors, and employees

  • Write routine reports and correspondence

  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

  • Perform basic mathematical calculations such as add, subtract, multiply and divide as well as calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume

  • Adapt to changes in the work environment
