Maintenance Mechanic

General Description

General Summary of Duties: Reports to and receives assignments, instructions, and direction from the Foreman or General Foreman. Reads and interprets instructions and documentation and plans work activities. Insures highest quality

standards are instilled in all installations. Moves materials and equipment to work locations and sets up work site. Maintains, repairs, and replaces or installs a broad range of mechanical equipment and support systems in support of base construction and maintenance activities. Completes records, maintains tools and equipment, and performs various clean-up and housekeeping activities. Responsible for identifying proper materials required for specific installations, submitting material requisitions through the procurement process and following up with materials and/or logistics personnel until received. Observes and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties and activities as directed. The skills for this position are acquired through Certification as Journeyman Millwright and 7-10 years of experience."

Specific Job Description

  • Repair and lubricate machines and equipment.

  • Assemble and install equipment, using hand tools and power tools.

  • Position steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings, to determine work procedures.

  • Insert shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.

  • Move machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.

  • Attach moving parts and subassemblies to basic assembly unit, using hand tools and power tools.

  • Assemble machines, and bolt, weld, rivet, or otherwise fasten them to foundation or other structures, using hand tools and power tools.

  • Lay out mounting holes, using measuring instruments, and drill holes with power drill.

  • Bolt parts, such as side and deck plates, jaw plates, and journals, to basic assembly unit.

  • Align pump/motor shafts using precision dial indicator instruments.

  • Level bedplate and establish centreline, using straightedge, levels, and transit.

  • Dismantle machines, using hammers, wrenches, crowbars, and other hand tools.

  • Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items, using portable gas heating equipment.

  • Dismantle machinery and equipment for shipment to installation site, usually performing installation and maintenance work as part of team.

  • Construct foundation for machines, using hand tools and building materials such as wood, cement, and steel.

  • Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards.

  • Monitor work progression to ensure compliance to codes & standards.

  • Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Certification/Qualification in discipline through NCCER, recognized apprenticeship Program and/or Associates Degree in Mechanical Maintenance

  • 5+ years' experience working in an industrial type setting

  • Communication Skills

  • Comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to understand information, ideas, direction and then can perform the task or project discussed. Also, to be able to ask questions to insure you understand the information given.

  • Ability to perform repetitive movements, work overhead, use hands to grasp, reach with arms, acsend/descend stairs, ladders, fixed ladders, walkways, walk, stand, stoop for long periods of time, enter tight congested areas to include awkard positions, sit, climb, balance, and be able to lift 50 lbs. single person
  • 80 lbs. two persons.
  • Ability to work extended hours in addition to normal shift in all weather and temperature extremes.

  • Vision adequate to perform all required tasks.

  • Ability to work over 6 feet above the ground; must not be afraid of heights.

  • Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining a clean work area.

Work Schedule

The work schedule is 5/8 hour days. Note: At times, additional work hours & schedules will exist at the request of the client to meet specific work schedules support Maintenance, Capital, and Production work activities.
