Job Description:

General Summary: Seattle Pacific University seeks a dedicated and skilled Maintenance Foreman to lead our maintenance team. This is a key role with responsibilities split between leadership (60%) and hands-on maintenance (40%). The successful candidate will assist the Maintenance Manager in field coordination and oversight of the maintenance staff, provide mentorship and skills training, and cultivate a culture of safety and community among the team.

Essential Job Duties:

Foreman (60%)

Leadership:

  • Provide field coordination and assist Maintenance Manager with supervision of maintenance staff.

  • Mentor and develop skills of ten maintenance staff, and supervise 1-2 seasonal temporary staff.

  • Support maintenance safety programs, conduct monthly "Tool Talk" safety training, and ensure safety records are up-to-date.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of shop areas, ensuring safety compliance.

  • Act as backup for the Maintenance Manager, coordinating work assignments and addressing issues with the Assistant Vice President for Facility Management.

Quality Control:

  • Inspect and evaluate work to ensure quality and completeness.

  • Re-open or create work orders to correct sub-par or incomplete work.

  • Troubleshoot challenges, solve problems, and mentor staff on skills and workmanship.

  • Assist in overseeing field work of outside contractors, ensuring quality and completeness.

Tradesworker (40%)

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs related to carpentry, mechanical equipment, electrical systems, low voltage systems, plumbing systems, HVAC equipment, and door hardware/locks.

  • General carpentry work including repairing and installing windows, doors, screens, and hardware.

  • Maintain, repair, and replace equipment in offices, classrooms, laboratories, and common areas.

Additional Duties:

  • Carry and deploy ladders, perform work from ladders, elevated platforms, and rooftops.

  • Inspect worksites for safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Be on-call on a rotating basis, approximately 7 times per year.

  • Work during university closures due to inclement weather or emergencies as essential staff.

  • Maintain necessary certifications and perform regulated building materials abatement as needed.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Graduation from a vocational technical school or commensurate experience.

  • Achieved Journey level skills certification in two building trades (e.g., plumbing, painting, carpentry, electrical, locksmith, welder, automotive mechanic).

  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures used around electricity.

Experience:

  • 5 years of journeyman level skills in two building trades, building maintenance, or construction.

  • Comfortable training and supervising a team.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, charts, and technical instructions.

  • Proven good judgment in decision-making, problem-solving, and communication.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Valid Washington State Driver's license with a good driving record.

  • EPA Lead Renovator Certification (8-hr).

  • Ability to achieve and maintain a minimum of 8-hour Asbestos Awareness Certification (training provided).

  • Forklift certification.

Other Considerations:

  • Effective work habits including commitment to quality, attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.

  • Physically able to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, and working from elevated platforms. Physically able to wear tight fitting half mask respirator and pass annual medical exam.

  • Proficient in using hand tools and power equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • 5 years of leadership experience in a supervisory role.

  • Knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, and fire codes.Ability to achieve and maintain AHERA Building Inspector Certification.

  • Ability to achieve and maintain a 40-hour Asbestos Supervisor Certification (training provided).

  • Familiarity with TMA work order tracking software, MS Project, AutoCAD.

Rate of pay: $35.09 - $36.19 per hour, DOE

This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes generous contributions to an employee HSA account and a 7% contribution to a retirement account, for eligible employees, with immediate vesting in the plan. Tuition discount program (50% - 90%) available for the employee and qualified immediate family members.
