Primary Purpose

Denver7, Scripps' ABC affiliate in Denver, CO is hiring a Maintenance Engineer II. The Maintenance Engineer II works under the direction of the Director of Engineering to provide preventative maintenance and emergency repairs of video, audio, IT and HD equipment and radio frequency (RF) systems including high power UHF transmitters and microwave. Heavy emphasis on Newsgathering equipment including camcorders, VTR's wireless gear, live trucks, and monitors.

Key Activities

  • Provide world-class customer service to all business partners internal and external to the Scripps organization with a positive "can-do" attitude.

  • Assist in supporting, maintaining, and installing the full range of broadcast, digital workflow, RF, and production systems based on both SDI and IP based architecture. May need to run and facilitate cables and connectors.

  • Assist in setting up new and enhancing existing software, hardware, server, automation and workflow systems, projects, and equipment to enable our teams to be both productive and efficient. Ensure all meet current industry standards and comply with Company policies and expectations.

  • Partner with News to help develop, build and support content workflow and support systems including integration and problem-solving software, hardware, networking, and infrastructure. This will include the support and integration of Audio and Video, Cameras, editing systems, streaming, content management, and workflow.

  • Use the company purchasing management system to purchase and track assets and services as well as replacement cycles. This will include contributing to budgeting planning with the team and DoE to support business needs.

  • Drive, and provide assistance in operation, support, and maintenance of mobile live trucks which may involve work in confined spaces and on top of vehicles with the use of mobile work platforms. Live truck technology may include microwave, satellite, cellular bonding, and video/audio equipment.

  • Assist in the design of any improvements to our operation.

  • Help maintain logs and reports as per FCC Rules and Regulations.

  • Provide, enhance, and utilize proactive monitoring system to anticipate technical issues and be able to act accordingly

  • Update technical plan documentation when installations are completed to include changes that are made.

  • Document and maintain records of equipment repairs.

  • Research part numbers and pricing to determine where to purchase and the cost of repairs.

  • Ability and willingness to operate all studio, news and control room equipment.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

Education & Experience/Certifications.

  • Associates degree or bachelor's degree (preferred) in computer science, electronic engineering, or related subjects.

  • Network certification (Cisco, CompTIA Network+, Etc.)

Skills and abilities

  • Willing to develop knowledge in all of the following areas, and specialize in at least one of these areas:

  • Broadcast and production systems support and engineering including SDI and IP based technology and workflow

  • Extensive knowledge of computer networking, broadcast automation, and workflow systems.

  • Transmitter support and engineering.

  • A strong understanding and ability to work with IT/cellular systems, servers, and devices, and actively pursue emerging technology in these areas.

  • Solid working knowledge of Windows, Apple, and Linux server and client operating systems including active directory.

  • Some knowledge of CAD an advantage.

  • Positive "can-do" attitude and willingness to learn and grow with the job.

  • Strong people skills and the ability to deliver a high level of customer service.

  • Team player.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with departmental and station personnel, and external companies and customers as required.

  • Ability to resolve complex problems not covered by existing procedures or practices independently often whilst under pressure.

  • Must have some knowledge of FCC rules.

  • Ability and willingness to learn complex new systems.

  • Ability to work independently under timelines to achieve departmental and station goals.

  • Must be able to comprehend schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical manuals.

  • Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and work within deadlines.

  • Familiarity with various test instruments, alignment apparatuses and knowledge of personal computers.

  • Operational knowledge of television station equipment.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including able to work multiple days, holidays, evenings, weekends, and possible overtime hours as needed. Availability to travel over multiple days is possible.

  • Must be able to work in changing weather conditions.

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required. In addition, proof of insurance and liability coverage may be required.

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: * Performs semi-skilled and light to heavy physical labor on a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects that involves physical exertion and the operation of light weight motorized equipment and hand and power tools. * Operates construction equipment such as jack-hammers, air spades, shovels, rotors, metal detectors, and air drills and hand digs, excavates, shores, grades, and backfills trenches. * Operates light weight equipment powered by small engines for maintenance and minor construction projects and patches asphalt and paved areas. * Performs semi-skilled work assisting skilled trade workers maintain city infrastructure including routine repairs to buildings and facilities such as painting, plastering, roof repairs, plumbing repairs, and electrical equipment repairs. * Breaks out cement, digs out areas for new cement bases, mixes and pours cement for traffic control boxes, signal light poles, and pull boxes, and installs plastic PVC or metal piping in bases for traffic signal wiring. * Irrigates assigned areas with manual or computerized equipment and applies chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers onto lawn areas. * Performs exterior maintenance duties including mowing and aerating fields, lawn areas, and ditches, rakes leaves, clears ditches, lakes, pond, and park areas of debris, prunes shrubs, and plants bushes and trees. * Lifts and empties heavy solid waste containers into disposal trucks, operates hydraulic compaction unit on city trash collection vehicles, and washes trucks as needed. * Performs minor repairs on gardening and grounds equipment, vehicles, and machinery including repairs of sprinkler systems and may design and fabricate equipment and tools as needed. * Places and removes barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas for construction and maintenance projects in accordance of with traffic regulation requirements. * Performs event set up and strike down including transporting chairs, tables, and other items. * Assembles, moves, removes, and relocates furniture, furnishings, and equipment and repairs and stores articles of furniture. * Observes all common safety practices associated with small engines and hand and power tool equipment operations. * Assists in training and checking the work of other employees on various projects. * Operates vehicles at a higher level of complexity on the equipment operation list and in that capacity perform pre-trip inspections on equipment for such things as fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, brake lights, and related areas, secure, clean and care for all basic tools and equipment needed for job assignments, and drives vehicle to various job sites. * Performs seasonal street maintenance duties such as snow plowing, salting and sanding, removing snow and ice from sidewalks, steps, seats, ramps, and parking lots and hauls ice and snow away by truck. * Performs other related duties as assigned.
