The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses the regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture. The labs consist of the Food & Drug Protection Division Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue labs; the Veterinary Division Animal Disease Diagnostic lab; the Standards Division Weights and Measures lab, and the Standards Division Fuel Quality testing lab.

These laboratories form the scientific basis for all regulatory work performed by the Department ensuring consumer protection for human and animal food, commerce, and animal health. This facility also houses a Biosafety Level III lab analyzing for pathogenic micro-organisms and an animal necropsy lab.

The Facility Maintenance section is responsible for all buildings and maintenance for the ASC and the three veterinary division's satellite laboratories.

This position assists with maintenance and repairs of the general physical building, mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, equipment, and surrounding grounds of the ASC and the three satellite laboratories. This includes assisting with monitoring all operating systems including chillers, boilers, HVAC, and incinerators, and repairing plumbing and electrical issues.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Basic knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general building maintenance and/or the repair of equipment.

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days, a valid NC driver's license.

  • Ability to demonstrate skill in the use of tools required for general maintenance and/or building repair work.

  • Ability to operate common types of machine shop or woodworking power equipment.

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with supervisor and coworkers and understand verbal and written instructions and communications regarding work assignments.

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification:

May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
