MAINTENANCE CARPENTER
(Project Position up to 12 Months)
Salary $43.65 - $48.26 / Hourly

DEFINITION
Under supervision, performs skilled maintenance carpentry and performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Erects, maintains, and repairs various types of buildings, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures; makes cabinets, counters, lockers, shelves, doors, and window frames; and
Keeps tools, materials, and equipment in good condition; and
Makes rough sketches and estimates the cost of new structures and repair work; and
Advises in the selection of building materials, requisitions and stores building materials and supplies; and
Keeps simple records and makes reports; consults with other trades persons; and
Instructs and leads unskilled assistants.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry, or graduation from a recognized trade school;
WITH three years of experience as a journey-level carpenter;
AND possession of a valid California driver's license and have and maintain an insurable driving record.
Bilingual skills in ASL, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and/or Spanish are a plus.
Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF: principles, methods, tools, and equipment used in carpentry; building codes; rough and finish carpentry; and the use and care of hand and power tools used in carpentry.
SKILL IN: preparing rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor; reading blueprints, plans, and specifications; interpreting specifications; performing all phases of carpentry relevant to renovation, rehabilitation, and modernization of Authority structures; identifying and using the tools of the trade; and recognizing lumber types and grades.
ABILITY TO: perform work that requires some physical strength and agility, including the ability to sit three to four hours, to stand and walk five to six hours, to bend three to four hours, to crawl one to two hours; reach, crouch, kneel, and balance for three to four hours; and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds unassisted, and other abilities as specified in the State of California Division of Industrial Accidents form RB-91 for this classification. Also requires the ability to follow oral and written directions; keep simple records and make reports; instruct and lead unskilled assistants; and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing (or with audio and visual capacities).
