SUMMARY

The Main Control Operator is responsible for the security of the facility.

Employee will monitor TV monitors at all times to determine the safety and report any issues in the facility.

Focus on duties assigned to efficiently manage the main control room and assist Juvenile Supervision Officer (JSO) staff in complying with Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) standards.

The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

Rotating shift work, overtime; weekends and working during holidays may be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Monitors TV monitors at all times.

Allows access into the facility to JSO staff, Juvenile Department Staff, counselors, teachers, doctors and visitors.

Ensure that only authorized personnel are allowed inside the secure section of the facility.

Monitors the back door for kitchen deliveries and allowed personnel.

Communicate with JSO Shift Supervisor if facility schedule is being followed or has been changed.

Makes sure all doors are secure when not in use.

Identify through the intercom system all unknown persons wanting access inside the facility.

Maintain accurate log of all events that occur, including phone calls in a clear concise format.

Paperwork to be passed down to other main control operator needs to be neat, organized and correct.

May be asked to assist in verifying medication is administered correctly to residents. (medication counts).

Responsible for the proper filing and management of all paperwork and forms kept in the main control area.

Exercise caution in any potential dangerous and/or hazardous situation.

Maintains a hazard free hygienic workstation.

Respond to all emergency situations, including medical (call 9-1-1) fire, escapes, in accordance with departmental policies.

Complies with TJJD Code of Ethics.

Able to work long and/or unusual hours to fulfill tasks necessary in maintaining the efficient operation of the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum qualifications include:

1. High school diploma or GED certificate

2. be at least 21 years of age

3. Pass a criminal background check

4. Pass Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (child neglect) background check; and

5. preferred experience in education and training in a juvenile correction.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have a valid driver's license or identification card.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before employees of Nueces County or the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to hear telephone, police radio, intercom and traffic thru the consoles at one time.

Ability to maintain alertness and be responsive in any situation.

Ability to effectively use a police radio, which includes handling radio checks and emergency situations such as a signal three (inmate fighting), a signal nineteen (an officer in trouble) and a fire alarm.

Ability to process an incident report.

Ability to answer telephones, transfer calls and give out predetermined information to the public.

Ability to utilize a computer.

Ability to open solid steel doors to secure entrance to the facility and main control room.

Possess sufficient coordination to watch the monitors, work the console board and answer telephones at the same time.

Ability to refrain from discussing juveniles being detained at the facilities with anyone not employed at Detention or Robert N. Barnes.

Ability to refrain from negative discussions regarding co-workers, probation staff, counselors, teachers, and supervisors.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Close vision needed to work on the computer, watch the monitors, read the location board and do the shift paperwork.

Color vision needed to distinguish the colors on the inmate location board.

Peripheral vision is needed in the event you are watching the T.V. monitors.

Depth perception is needed in order to distinguish the distance between officers and inmates on the T.V. monitors.

Must be able to adjust focus in order to identify an officer or an inmate if needed.
