Position Description
Come join our team at Jefferson Lab, where great minds matter.
Posting Date: 03/29/2024
Salary Range: $69,900-$110,500 (SE I), 87,700 - $138,800 (SE II)
Work Location Type: 100% dedicated on-site
What your job will be like:
The Experimental Nuclear Physics Division at Jefferson lab is seeking an Engineer to perform professional level technical work in areas of mechanical/electrical engineering including but not limited to-mechanical design, heat transfer, thermodynamics, magnet design, electromagnetic design, cryogenics, vacuum system design, structural design, pressure vessel and piping design, PLC controls and other related engineering areas.
SEI:
In your role, you will…
Perform as a design engineer on components and systems employed in JLab's Physics Division experimental setups. Examples of such systems include: 1. Particle detectors (almost all of which have high accuracy alignment systems) 2. Air-cooled, water-cooled and superconducting magnets (superconducting magnets require cryogens for cooling). 3. Magnet design requires many disciplines such as fluid dynamics, stress analysis, heat transfer, and magnetic field analysis (Magnets also have safety requirements to protect them from potential damage from stored energy and to protect people from the stray fields).
Design systems such as those above may operate in air or vacuum. You will be exposed to vacuum pumps and supporting systems. This will require pump-down calculations and learning about cleaning of parts and material outgassing.
Learn to use ASME pressure vessel and piping codes. Follow Jefferson Lab's ES&H manual.
Work with other engineers, scientists and technicians in defining requirements, designing, analyzing, fabricating, installing, testing and commissioning components or systems.
Present conceptual and detailed designs to engineers, physicists, instrumentation & control programmers and installation technicians.
Analyze electro-magnetic, structural and thermal aspects of designs by performing analytical calculation as well as using FEA tools
Learn magnet design tools OPERA/TOSCA-3D multi-physics magnetic analysis, and ANSYS/MAXWELL through self-study or by taking in-house classes given by experts.
Design components and assemblies in a 3D CAD tool such as Siemens NX, produce CAD models, fabrication drawings, and check and approve drawings by others for fabrication of those designs, support procurement and fabrication of components and assemblies.
Document work in analysis reports, test reports, and technical notes and present results at internal reviews, and appropriate technical conferences.
Support on call for experimental support.
