The Magnet Design Engineer position provides the successful candidate with an immediate opportunity to be involved with technology that helps save lives, improve patient outcomes, and reduce the cost of medicine around the world. You are responsible for

In this role as Magnet Design Engineer, you will focus primarily on application of electromagnetic design principles to the development and maintenance of superconducting MRI magnet products and technologies. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Design of primary magnetic field producing coils.

  • Design of passive magnetic field shim systems for superconducting magnets

  • Development of computer codes to calculate passive shim system parameters for real magnets and environments.

  • Detailed design, analysis, and testing of magnet components.

  • Technical risk analysis.

  • Documenting design inputs and outputs.

  • Reviewing and ensuring adequacy of vendor qualification activities.

  • Participating in multidisciplinary project teams through all phases of product development to ensure successful execution of innovative and best-in-class designs.

You are a part of

The Development Engineering team, based in Latham, NY, consists of 17 other engineers with diverse backgrounds and expertise. The Development Engineering team works in close collaboration with Design & Drafting, Project Management, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, and Quality team members throughout the product development lifecycle. The Development Engineering office is co-located with manufacturing, so they are able to see the products come to life and work closely with manufacturing to ensure the final product meets the design intent of the Development Engineer and will meet the expectations of the customer.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience


  • Minimum B.Sc. level in physics or an engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of practical electromagnetic analysis & design experience

Required Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated use of advanced electromagnetic design tools (Opera, Maxwell, HFSS, Remcom, CST, etc.)

  • Ability and willingness to write custom software (C++, C#), preferably also in a modern scripting language (Ruby, Python)

  • Ability to provide technical leadership in ambiguous situations

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Superconducting magnet design and operation

  • Superconducting magnet component design

  • Demonstrated use of magnetic materials to shape magnetic fields

  • Quench propagation analysis

  • Quench protection system design

  • Combined electromagnetic and mechanical force/stress analysis

  • Software tools - Mathcad, ANSYS, Inventor, AutoCAD, Spaceclaim, LabView, Matlab

  • Experience working with cryogenics

  • Experience working with ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code

  • Hands on experience with fabrication methods

  • Hands on experience performing lab testing and data acquisition

  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5

In this role you will manage complex projects that bring together renewable energy, state-of-the-art hydrogen production and liquefaction technology to design the first generation of commercial-scale green hydrogen production infrastructure. You will help define a new way of building and operating hydrogen plants that looks more like renewable energy development than traditional gas infrastructure without losing the lessons and hard-won experience of the traditional methods. In this role, you will help build out an EPC management team that lays the foundation for the coming decades of renewable hydrogen scale up and build-out. What you'll do: * Manage plant design and engineering activities for a project development pipeline coordinating and managing outside contract engineering resources. * Collaborate closely with the Hydrogen Operations team to ensure plants are designed for safe, resilient, efficient, and low-cost operation. * Perform detailed technical analysis of plant equipment and technology options that you can present to senior management with recommendations. * Evaluate and source select critical sets of equipment. * Perform techno-economic analysis of emerging renewable molecule pathways and technologies to help form long-term strategy and vision. * Ensure projects are progressing on schedule and within budget. * Select, manage, and direct third party consultants or contractors and review their reports. * Perform plant operational modeling. * Represent company in industry advocacy groups. * Remain abreast of renewable energy opportunities in the United States and the national industry trends impacting the future of hydrogen and renewable development opportunities and their competitiveness as they relate to customers. What you bring: * Minimum 4 years of engineering experience in hydrogen related technologies. * Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is required. Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is preferred. * Proven record of accomplishment. * Experience with hydrogen production projects. Experience in electrolysis and liquefaction technologies is preferred. * Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems and to prioritize critical path tasks. * Track record of successfully working with third parties to accomplish project goals. * Working knowledge of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and hydropower. * Superior verbal and written communication skills and high level of attention to detail with the ability to present to a wide range of audiences, including contractors, operations personnel, and corporate leaders.
