About the role

B&D Industrial / American Gear and Engineering is seeking a Machinist / Operator to join our team. The position will be responsible for producing high quality gears and associated parts to improve our customer's production and reliability performance, primarily focused on mechanical power transmission systems.

  • Full time.

  • Overtime is required.

  • Location: Westland, MI

  • Salary range is based on experience.

Primary Function:

  • Set up and operate machining centers and gear manufacturing equipment to produce high-quality production gears and associated parts safely and efficiently.

  • Use related equipment, including metal cutting tools and inserts, fixtures and clamping equipment, various hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.

  • Jib and overhead cranes used for material handling.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate dimensions or tolerances, using instruments, such as micrometers or vernier calipers.

  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as gear cutters, lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.

  • Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations; Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition.

  • Assemble machine tools, parts, or fixtures.

  • Measure dimensions of completed products or workpieces to verify conformance to specifications.

  • Operate cutting and grinding equipment.

  • Review blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences.

  • Keep facilities, material, and work area clean and orderly.

  • Conform to safety and inspection requirements and perform all the above operations in a safe and efficient manner.

Candidate requirements

  • One to three years of machining experience, demonstrating good skill and ability on the machines operated.

  • Basic knowledge of machining terminology and procedures.

  • Experience in the machining of alloy steel and other metals, gear manufacturing a plus.

  • Ability to use quality inspection gaging, indicating, and measuring techniques including verniers, calipers, and micrometers.

  • Must work both in groups and independently.

  • Must be reliable, responsible, and dependable to fulfill obligations to the customer.

  • Job requires analytical thinking; analyzing information and using logic to address work-related issues and problems.

  • Job requires creativity and alternative thinking to develop new ideas and answers to complete tasks.

  • Job requires excellent attention to detail and thorough in completing work tasks.

  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.

  • You must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds.

  • Successful candidates must submit to post offer pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, and have an acceptable 3-year Motor Vehicle Report as may be required by current company policy.
