Overview

Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.

  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.

  • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.

  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.

  • Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.

  • Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.

  • Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.

  • Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.

  • Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.

  • Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School diploma/GED and One year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience reading blueprints.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to understand both verbal and written communications both general and technical. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Must have mechanical aptitude. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be qualified welder.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS

Must have current valid driver's license.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Must have personal tools (complete set of small hand tools up to and including " drive ratchet and socket set).

VIEW JOBS 4/17/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-16T00:00 * Operate various machine tools to manufacture and repair mechanical assemblies. * Record all data necessary to produce expected service and/or design results, including sizings and illustrations. * Use measuring devices and techniques correctly to assure proper sizings. * Perform milling operations such as drilling, tapping, boring and conventional milling and lathe work, using various engine lathes (e.g., horizontal and vertical mills * and horizontal boring mills). * Perform various metalizing (metal spraying) techniques as needed. * Understand materials and applications as required. * Set up and perform tool-post grinding procedures and Babbitt bearing work. * Use various hand-held and stationary power and non-power tools, including but not limited to: band saws, belt sanders, hand grinder, files, etc. * Lift, tighten, adjust and/or secure heavy objects in order to perform work and/or to observe safety precautions. * Observe all safety procedures and use proper protective gear (especially eye and ear protection). * Assist other machinists in department with skilled or non-skilled duties as directed by supervisor or shop manager. * Other duties as assigned. Necessary Skills * Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a Manual Machinist in machine shop & job shop work environment—(CNC experience is not applicable). * Prior electric motor experience or in a machine shop is helpful and prior work experience, and/or certification, doing mig and tig welding a plus. * Certification from a Technical school helpful.
