Purpose and Scope

A Confluent Machinist sets up and controls operation of single or multiple production machines for the process of manufacturing custom components and molds utilized in our products. Uses lathes, mills, drills, grinding, honing and other machines to build components to precise specifications quickly and efficiently. Uses sketches, blueprints, and engineering details. Inspects work produced to ensure all quality standards are satisfied and identifies all defects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consistently produce work that is free of defects, on time, following the guidance of assigned leaders

  • Consistently hold tolerances of ±.0010" on components and meet all classes of fits on assemblies

  • Will solve common shop math problems using handbook formulas, geometry, and trigonometry. Documents solutions and stores/files copies as required.

  • Read and understand multipage blueprints, schematics, machine manuals, and mechanical drawings such as assemblies, hydraulic, pneumatic, and review interpretation with leaders for accuracy

  • Follows a logical series of operations and uses the standard, unique, or specialized tooling required to complete the assigned task. Use standard industry layout techniques prior to machining operations.

  • Uses work holding jigs or fixtures for the manufacture and/or inspection of components and assemblies.

  • Sets-up and operates typical tool room machinery and attachments such as but not limited to: bandsaws, presses, lathes, follower rest, steady rest, milling machines, rotary tables, boring heads, jig borers, broaching machines and methods, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, tool and cutter grinders, jig grinders, conversationally programmed machinery, and CNC machines

  • Possess a knowledge of common metal properties and how they affect the machinability ratings

  • Identify and resolve machining issues with assistance from assigned leaders

  • Accurately use a wide variety of industry standard precision measuring equipment, gages, coordinate measuring machines, surface plate inspection techniques, and applying thermal expansion rates, occasionally relying on direction from assigned leaders

  • Demonstrate and apply the correct inspection methods for all GD&T symbols

  • Assist in troubleshooting and start-up development in production areas, may produce low volume production parts as necessary

  • Check and maintain machines according to the daily preventive maintenance instructions

  • Learn from self-directed research and the knowledge of coworkers to improve overall company efficiency. It is the employee's responsibility to demonstrate a continuous progression of their skill sets

Qualifications

Education And Experience

  • 6 - 8 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Education does not supersede experience.

Communication Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to read engineering schematics/blue prints.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. May need to use trigonometry or calculus to gain cutting angles and profiles.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Work Environment

  • Follows safe work practices and maintains an organized and neat work area. This includes identifying potential risks and recommending/implementing remediations to those risks.

  • Extensive interaction over the entire manufacturing floor requires significant standing and walking on an ongoing basis and the team leader must have the ability to sit and stand, use arms, hands and fingers to perform routine administrative duties and lift 50 lbs.

  • Requires close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point).
