The College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon is looking for a Shop Manager for the professional and student machine shops, which are part of the Tech Spark fabrication facility. The professional shop staff support research activities across the campus by helping design and then fabricate components for various projects. In the student shop more than 250 students a year learn basic machining and more than 100 CNC machining. During the academic year, the shops have extensive open hours, including evenings and weekends, to support student projects for courses and extracurricular activities. During open hours, shop personnel actively work with students to ensure safe operation of equipment, to provide additional skills instruction, and to advise on component design and construction, including issues such as part geometry, selection of materials, tolerances, etc. Work in close collaboration with the Tech Spark Fabrication Manager, and works under the advisement of the Tech Spark Faculty Director.
Core responsibilities include:
Intake, estimate, and assign recharge work for the professional shop
Fabricate parts, assemblies, and research apparatuses
Supervise day-to-day activities of shop instructors and student workers
Assign work and maintenance, implement safety policies and access controls, fulfill reservations, track usage, document procedures, and purchase items for shop areas
Instruct courses, deliver training events, and support other programmatic activities
Run open hours to provide fabrication/prototyping/design assistance to students, faculty, and staff in academic, research, and extracurricular activities across all Tech Spark facilities
Assists in curriculum development
Provide design/prototyping expertise, mentorship and technical guidance to a variety of students engaged in academic, entrepreneurial, and extra- curricular design/ build projects
Attend required meetings and participate in various seminars and training classes to maintain or update skills needed
Other duties as assigned

Associates degree required
Five years or more years of relevant full-time experience in a professional manufacturing or machine shop required
Supervisory experience in a shop environment
Expertise in the use and maintenance of machine tools
Advanced experience using Solidworks, MasterCam, and/or CAD/CAM software.
Experience in design for manufacture
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field
Experience guiding and working with students in both formal and informal settings to train them to safely and efficiently use machine tools and rapid prototyping equipment including, but not limited to: hand tools, power tools, drill presses, band saws, lathes, knee mills, CNC milling machines, welding, woodworking, water-jet cutting, 3D printers, and laser cutters
Experience teaching design for manufacture and prototyping skills
Supervisory experience in a college/university setting, preferably of a student or research shop
Expertise in the design and fabrication of research apparatus based on verbal and/or written instructions
