PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

The Rotary Die Cutter Operator is responsible for the safe set up and operation of the 2-color and/or 4-color rotary die-cutter and print deck machine ensuring high-quality corrugated packaging and products are produced at a consistent rate of speed in accordance with machine standards, production goals, and customer specifications.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely starts up, sets up and performs necessary machine adjustments to the rotary die-cutter and print decks in a consistent manner while adhering to required safety, quality, and production operating procedures.

  • Produces quality packaging that meets target speeds and production goals; ensures precise measurements and proper alignments are performed within the allotted time frame established for the specific job.

  • Reviews job ticket instructions prior to each run; ensures all pre-make ready supplies have been provided including inks, print plates, dies, and all tooling necessary to produce job per customer specifications.

  • Actively performs all SCT Quality procedures including required quality checks and obtaining required approvals; works with machine crew to continuously monitor production to ensure quality standards are consistent and meet customer specifications regarding print, die-cutting, and corrugated stock standards.

  • Continuously monitors machine operation to detect any malfunctions and identifies defects or deviations from quality standards; performs machine adjustments and troubleshooting to correct defects.

  • Follows all safety related policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines; uses situational awareness and actively looks for weak signals to identify unsafe behaviors and conditions; consistently wears appropriate PPE for the task at hand and within the assigned area; immediately notifies Supervisor of any unsafe condition that exists.

  • Reports any issues with equipment, dies, or raw material to Supervisor, Quality Manager and/or Maintenance department.

  • Records defects or non-conforming items appropriately and notifies Supervisor or Quality Manager; ensures that finished products with defects are properly scrapped and discarded while consistently following procedures to minimize waste.

  • During production run, handles finished product bundles and squares product prior to shrink wrapping, if needed.

  • Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance as scheduled on machine, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn or damaged parts.

  • Troubleshoots issues or malfunctions with machinery and performs minor repairs when possible.

  • Actively communicates issues with machinery to the maintenance technicians and works together to troubleshoot and resolve issues while minimizing downtime.

  • Accurately records and completes productivity data and production notes for each job including start up times, down time, finished goods produced, raw material usage, waste, etc.

  • Provides guidance, instruction, and assistance to machine crew to ensure proper set up of the feeder, proper counts are packed, and correct labeling of finished goods.

  • Provides ongoing instruction and training to the Assistant Operator to ensure they can perform the tasks necessary to operate the machine in their absence.

  • Communicates with upstream and downstream internal customers effectively to improve safety, quality, and efficiency of production.

  • Actively seeks and adopts new updates and improvements to processes, new procedures, and innovations, which would add to the efficiency and safety of the operation.

  • Responsible for maintaining machines, equipment and work area that are within GMP and GFSI standards; assists the Food Safety Team in ensuring that product meets or exceeds GFSI standards.

  • Maintains a clean work environment including the machine, floors, desks, and supplies in accordance with the5S system.

  • Operators may cross train in other areas or on other machines as needed perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

AUTHORITY: Must have the ability to lead a crew that has been placed with them to execute the demands of the operation efficiently and to respond to oral instructions from the supervisor/lead and written instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent; requires a minimum of one year experience operating a multi-color rotary die-cutter, or 3 to 5 years' experience as a machine operator in a manufacturing facility; paperboard or corrugated packaging industry experience is preferred. Requires a strong mechanical aptitude and must have basic computer skills and be able to utilize computer software.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must have the ability to read and understand documents, letters, etc. and write legibly in English. Must be able to understand and speak clearly, communicate, and understand directions in English as needed. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, vendors, and other Team members of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide both fractions and decimals, solve equations, read a tape measure, and have an understanding of both standard and metric measuring systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, regularly required to walk, stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with arms and hands. Frequently is required to climb, balance, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently lifts/moves 25 pounds, occasionally lifts/moves up to 50 pounds. Must be able to perform these functions for a minimum of 10 hours straight (with a 30-minute meal break any other applicable breaks during the shift) on a regular basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Team member successfully performing the essential functions of this job. Regular attendance and reporting for work on time are necessary requirements as is availability for overtime work if necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to a dusty atmosphere with loud noise, which will require both eye and ear protection. Frequently exposed to vibration and is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. Moving mechanical parts will also be exposed; safety guards have been put in place for the safety of all Team members but during set up, the machine must be broken down and reassembled to complete the next job.
