Ford's Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world's first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.
Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people's lives by helping them move more freely, safely, and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use of sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry- and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae, and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up to 20 percent sustainable material by 2025!
What you'll be able to do:
Contribute to projects focused on developing the future in-vehicle software frameworks needed to support emerging task-specific and high-compute platforms for smart vehicles in a smart world (ex. AI, ML, data fusion, cyber security)
Develop computer vision and/or machine learning algorithms using innovative methods to enhance customer experiences in Ford vehicles
Perform hardware-software co-optimization to improve algorithm performance
Work closely with production customers (Platform Architecture, Power Train, ADAS, GDIA, etc.,) and conduct successful technical transfers from research to production
Research and analyze latest software design techniques and processes, machine learning enabling technologies, groundbreaking computer vision and machine learning algorithms and industry trends with universities and supplier partners and apply them to create "best in industry" research to production deployment
Perform competitive analyses and maintain knowledge of emerging technologies for both automotive and automotive enabling applications and technologies
Develop and maintain software and hardware integration test environments, simulation tools , debug complex software, evaluate and test software and hardware components for production readiness
Participate in technical workshops both within Ford and with suppliers to identify innovations that enable software development, compute architecture vehicle advancements, frameworks, and algorithm designs
Write and publish research papers based on findings and participate in committees and industry consortiums as required
Limited travel to cover business critical Software and Machine Learning Conferences, Industry or Vendor Events or collaborate with remote team members as required
Our minimum requirements:
Our preferred qualifications:
PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or any related field of study or a combination of education and equivalent experience
10+ years of experience with embedded software development in C/C++
10+ years of experience developing automotive software solutions
5+ years of experience in developing artificial intelligent (AI) or machine learning (ML) applications
3+ years of experience optimizing computer vision/machine learning algorithms for task specific accelerators/hardware
5+ years of experience working with a Software Development Lifecycle framework including during university studies
5+ years of experience in technical project management in research or production environments including during internship/co-op experience
3+ year of experience presenting project status to teams and management both in formal presentation and written formats including as part of university studies or class projects
Familiarity with scripting and new programming languages (Lua, Go, Rust, Python, etc.)
Knowledge and experience with Real Time Operating Systems (e.g., QNX), continuous integration tools (e.g., Jenkins), version control systems (e.g., GitHub), unit testing frameworks (e.g., GoogleTest), containers (e.g., Docker), static and dynamic code analysis tools (e.g., clang-tidy, Valgrind), debugging tools (e.g., GDB), code beautify tools (e.g., clang-format)
Proven ability to identify new software concepts and develop a rapid prototype environment to benchmark and or deliver quantifiable results to conclude recommendations
Proven ability to develop a work plan and lead a team through a software and or hardware rapid prototype project
Strong knowledge in AI, ML, and passion for identifying and understanding emerging advance software related trends
